The Dixie State football team returns to Trailblazer Stadium on Saturday for a Homecoming date against the Eagles of Chadron State College.
Â
Live coverage is scheduled on television (CEC-TV – TDS Cable Channel 108), radio (Radio Dixie 91.3 FM), and online on the DSU Stretch Internet Portal (portal.stretchinternet.com/dixiestate), with Keric Seegmiller providing play-by-play and Drayson Ball offering analysis and color commentary.
Â
ALL-TIME ON HOMECOMING SATURDAY: Saturday's matchup marks Dixie State's 14th Homecoming game of its NCAA Division II era (2006-present). The Trailblazers currently hold a 6-7 record in Homecoming Saturday matchups with victories over Humboldt State (2008, 2013), Western Oregon (2009), Menlo College (2014), Adams State (2017), and most recently a 52-45 thriller over No. 6 Colorado School of Mines last season. Â
Â
ALL-TIME VS. CHADRON STATE: Saturday's game marks the fourth meeting between Dixie State and Chadron State. The Trailblazers rolled to a 44-27 win in Chadron, Nebraska, in 2016 in the inaugural matchup between the teams. DSU and CSC took a 24-24 tie into the fourth quarter in the 2017 matchup at Trailblazer Stadium, before the Trailblazers scored twice in the fourth quarter to claim a 38-24 victory. The Eagles claimed their first win in the series last season with a 30-18 triumph in Chadron. Dixie State currently holds a 2-1 lead in the series, including a 1-0 mark inside Trailblazer Stadium.
Â
KNOW YOUR FOE: Chadron State enters Saturday's game with a 3-4 overall record and a 2-4 mark in RMAC play. After a 1-4 start to the season, the Eagles have won their last two games, scoring over 40 points in each outing.
Â
The Eagles rank third in the RMAC in total scoring, averaging 35.1 points per game. Additionally, the Eagles have scored at least 30 points in every game but one during the 2019 season. CSC averages an RMAC-best 470.9 yards (298.0 pass/172.9 rush) of total offense per game.
Â
Redshirt junior quarterback Dalton Holst leads the CSC charge, and has completed 158 passes for an RMAC-leading 2,079 yards and 20 touchdowns. The Eagles boast two receivers in the top-5 of the RMAC, including Cole Thurness (45 rec/583 yards/5 TD) and Tevon Wright (39 rec/558 yards/9 TD). Two CSC runnings backs have posted more than 400 yards rushing, including Elijah Myles (477 yards/6 TD) and Stevann Brown (409 yards/2 TD).
Â
Defensively, the Eagles allow an average of 32.7 points and 389.0 yards (214.6 pass/174.4 rush) of total offense per game. Redshirt junior linebacker Travis Wilson ranks second in the RMAC with 77 tackles. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Noah Kerchal boasts a team-best 4.5 sacks, while senior safety Tyree Fryar leads the Eagles with two interceptions.
Â
Two different kickers have seen action for the Eagles. Freshman Colton Dolder has connected on 5-of-7 field goal attempts and 12-of-16 point-after tries, while senior Will Morgan is a perfect 13-of-13 on point-after tries.
Â
LAST TIME OUT: Dixie State overcame a 14-7 halftime deficit to grind out a 28-20 win at Western Colorado in Gunnison, Colorado, on Saturday.
Â
RMAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: DSU senior defensive back Aaron Simpson was named RMAC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the win over Western. Simpson tallied eight tackles in the victory, including three solo stops, and added a pass breakup in the third quarter. However, Simpson put an exclamation mark on his performance with his RMAC-leading fifth interception of the season in the fourth quarter. With the Mountaineers threatening to cut into the DSU lead late in the final period, Simpson made a leaping interception on a fade route to the back of the end zone to extinguish the WCU scoring threat.
Â
LEADING THE NATION: The Dixie State defense leads all of NCAA Division II with 32 sacks. The Trailblazers are averaging 4.6 sacks per game and are closing in on the DSU single-season record of 39 sacks.
Â
LEADING THE LEAGUE: Redshirt sophomore Dylan Hendrickson, who added two sacks to his season tally on Saturday, leads the RMAC and ranks second nationally with 9.5 sacks. He now holds the DSU single-game and single-season sack record.
Â
Senior defensive back Aaron Simpson leads the RMAC and ranks fourth nationally with five interceptions and 138 return yards during the 2019 campaign. The five interceptions also tie the DSU single-season record.
Â
MAKING HISTORY: Aaron Simpson became the DSU single-season and career interception return yards leader on September 28, snagging two more interceptions to go with 56 return yards to push his season total to 138 yards. Simpson is also the DSU single-game interception return yards leader after racking up 82 return yards at New Mexico Highlands on September 21.
Â
The Trailblazers' 55-0 victory over NMHU on September 21 marked the first complete shutout in DSU's 14-year NCAA era. The victory also set a new Trailblazer mark for the largest margin of victory, breaking the previous margin of 42 points against Adams State last year.
Â
The Trailblazers' 23-14 win over Fort Lewis on September 14 marked DSU's first win in a road-opener since joining the NCAA Division II ranks in 2006.
Â
A record-setting 6,512 fans packed Trailblazer Stadium on September 7 to watch DSU take on CSU-Pueblo. The mark snapped the previous single-game attendance record of 5,498 set last year against Fort Lewis.
Â
UP NEXT: Dixie State closes its two-game homestand next Saturday with an RMAC showdown against Colorado Mesa. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
