ALL-TIME VS. BLACK HILLS STATE: Saturday's game marks the third meeting between Dixie State and Black Hills State. The teams first met on Sept. 17, 2016, in Spearfish, South Dakota, in a game that saw DSU rally from a 20-0 deficit in the second half and pull to within 20-14 late in the fourth quarter. However, a potential game-winning drive stalled in Yellow Jacket territory, and BHSU claimed the first victory of the series. Dixie State claimed its first win in the series a year later on Sept. 16, 2017, with a 38-16 triumph inside Trailblazer Stadium. DSU again found itself in an early hole, trailing 10-0 in the first quarter. This time, the Trailblazers responded with 38 unanswered points before BHSU added a late touchdown. The overall series is tied at 1-1 with the home team claiming both victories.
KNOW YOUR FOE: The Yellowjackets enter the week with an 0-4 overall record and the same mark in RMAC play. Having played three of its first four games on the road, BHSU returns to Lyle Hare Stadium for just the second time this season.
The Yellowjackets average 387.5 yards (265.8 pass/121.7 rush) of total offense per game. Senior quarterback Ryan Hommel (84-138-1/753 yards pass/4 TD; 24 carries/202 yards rush/2 TD) leads the offense, while sophomore Collin Powers (26-45-1/233 yards pass/TD) has seen time in all four games this season. Junior receiver Eriq Swiftwater has been the favorite target for the quarterbacks, making 24 catches for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Payten Gilmore leads the running backs with 39 carries for 145 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Black Hills State is allowing 472.2 yards (258.8 pass/213.4 rush) of total offense per game. Senior linebacker Austin Goddard leads the BHSU defense with 35 tackles, while junior defensive back Josh Gurnaby is a close second with 34 tackles. Senior defensive back Drew Hebel leads the secondary with two interceptions.
Sophomore Jacob Parks handles punting duties, averaging 43.1 yards per punt on 23 attempts. Parks has placed eight punts inside the 20-yard line while booting seven kicks of 50 yards or more. Parks has split field goal and point-after duties with senior receiver Trey Fleming. The two have combined to convert on 2-of-6 field goal attempts and 7-of-10 point-after tries.
LAST TIME OUT: Dixie State rallied for its second come-from-behind victory in as many weeks on Saturday, edging South Dakota Mines for a thrilling 51-47 victory at Trailblazer Stadium.
The Trailblazers trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half and nine points in the second half, but rallied for its third consecutive victory to set a program record for the best start (3-1) in the Division II era.
Dixie State claimed the victory despite being outgained for the second straight week, finishing with 513 yards (288 pass / 225 rush) of total offense. Smith completed 10-of-17 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns, while Darms connected on 7-of-16 passes for 103 yards. Giovanni Sanders (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Mesa HS) led all DSU receivers with four catches for 80 yards, while Lauago recorded his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game with 144 yards on 21 carries. Lauago also tied a DSU single-game record with three rushing touchdowns.

Reinhardt added seven tackles and an interception, while Watson contributed six tackles and an interception. Remington Kelly (Bountiful, Utah/Bountiful HS) added five tackles and 1.5 sacks.
NCAA TOP PLAY: Dixie State made its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA.com Division II Football Plays of the Week on Tuesday. The Trailblazers landed at No. 2 this week as Aaron Simpson (Pasadena, Calif./Pasadena HS) and Isaiah Wooden (San Diego, Calif./Helix HS) teamed up for a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown to tie the game at 44-44 in the fourth quarter against South Dakota Mines.
