DSU Women fall at Biola Thursday, 73-56

The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped a 73-56 decision to Biola on Thursday inside Chase Gymnasium in La Mirada, California.

The Trailblazers (12-14, 8-11 PacWest) tied the game at 3-3 in the first quarter with a Matti Ventling (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas HS) 3-pointer, but the Eagles responded with a 22-3 run over the next seven minutes to take a 25-6 lead.

Dixie State opened the second quarter with back-to-back triples by Taylor Moeaki (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) and Ventling, to cut the lead to 27-14 at the 8:18 mark. Biola countered with an 8-2 run to push the lead back to 35-16. The game see-sawed back and forth until the Eagles took a 42-23 lead into the halftime break.

The Trailblazers made their biggest move of the game early in the third quarter, using an 11-2 run to pull within 47-36 at the 5:09 mark. Moeaki sparked the run with back-to-back baskets, while Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) and Ashlee Burge (Riverton, Utah/Herriman HS) added two points each. Ventling closed the stretch with a triple. But DSU wouldn't get any closer. Biola answered with its own 11-2 run to extend the lead back to 58-38.

The teams traded baskets through the fourth quarter until the Eagles closed out the 73-56 victory.

Dixie State shot 36 percent (21-of-57) from the field, 33 percent (9-of-27) from 3-point range, and 100 percent (5-of-5) from the free throw line. Ventling finished with a team-high 15 points, while Franks added 10 points.

The Trailblazers close the 2017-18 season at Point Loma on Saturday at 2 p.m. Pacific Time (3 p.m. MT).
