Sharks use second-half surge to stop the Trailblazers

The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped an 83-72 decision to No. 23 Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday inside the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers (11-13, 7-10 PacWest) led for more than half of the contest, but the Sharks used a second-half surge to down the home team, outscoring DSU 44-30 in the second half to earn the victory.

Dixie State jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind 3-point shots by Matti Ventling (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas HS) and Keslee Stevenson (Willard, Utah/Box Elder HS). Hawai'i Pacific countered with a 12-3 run over the next six minutes to take a 14-9 lead. DSU answered with an 8-4 run, including triples by Maile Richardson (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) and Tayor Moeaki, to pull to within 18-17.

The Trailblazers carried the run into the second quarter and built a 29-20 lead at the 7:19 mark. Stevenson hit back-to-back 3-pointers during the stretch, while Moeaki added another four points. The game seesawed back and forth through the remainder of the quarter until HPU tied the game at 39-39 with 30 seconds remaining. Moeaki then buried another trey to send the Trailblazers into the break with a 42-39 lead.

The Sharks pulled to within one basket of DSU on multiple occasions in the third quarter, but each time the Trailblazers answered until two Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) free throws gave the home squad a 56-50 advantage at the 1:54 mark. And then HPU made its move, closing the quarter on an 11-0 run, including two 3-pointers, to take a 61-56 lead.

Dixie State pulled to within three points at 63-60 early in the fourth quarter on a Tramina Jordan (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) layup, but would get no closer. The Sharks answered each DSU basket and pushed the lead to double digits for an 83-72 victory.

The Trailblazers shot 40 percent (26-of-64) from the field, 47 percent (9-of-19) from the free throw line, and 73 percent (11-of-15) from the free throw line. Moeaki led two DSU players in double figures with 21 points and four assists, while Stevenson added 13 points.
