No. 9 Softball sweeps Day 1 in Tucson

Cambrie Hazel tosses 12-strikeout no-hitter vs. LCU

The No. 9 Dixie State softball team took both ends of a combined doubleheader, 8-0 vs. Lubbock Christian and 3-2 vs. Western Oregon, on Saturday on the first day of competition at the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Arizona.

The Trailblazers (10-0) earned their third shutout victory of the season against Lubbock Christian as Cambrie Hazel (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork HS) (5-0) recorded her first collegiate no-hitter with 12 strikeouts. The win also propelled DSU to its best start in its Division II era.

Dixie State scored three runs in the first two innings against Western Oregon, then held off a late WOU rally to secure the win. Alexis Barkwell (San Diego, Calif./North Medford HS) (2-0) earned the win with six strikeouts, while Kori Gahn (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle HS) blasted a two-run home run in the first inning to help DSU to the victory.

GAME ONE

Dixie State and Lubbock Christian played to a scoreless tie through the first two innings as the two pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts during the stretch. Hazel put an exclamation point at the end of the second with her fifth strikeout of the game to end the frame, winning a 12-pitch battle to retire the LCU side.

The Trailblazers opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with three runs on three hits to take a 3-0 lead. Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) broke the tie with an RBI-single to left field, while Brenna Hinck (Tremonton, Utah/Bear River HS) plated two runs with a 2-RBI single through the left side.

Hazel then went back to work in the pitcher's circle and struck out the LCU side for the second time in the game.

Dixie State added another run in the fifth inning on a Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) RBI-single before the Trailblazers scored three runs on two hits and one LCU error in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 7-0. DSU closed the scoring in the seventh inning when Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) singled through the right side to score Riley Tyteca (Farmington, Utah/Viewmont HS) from third and push the score to the final tally of 8-0.

Hazel closed out the win in the bottom of the seventh, retiring the LCU side in order with two strikeouts, to secure her first collegiate no-hitter. Hazel finished with 12 strikeouts in what was also her first collegiate complete-game shutout.

Hinck led the charge at the plate with two hits and 3 RBI, while Bassett and Tyteca also logged a two-hit performance.

GAME TWO

Dixie State jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Gahn belted her first career home run to left center, a two-run shot, to give the Trailblazers the early advantage.

DSU extended the lead to 3-0 in the second inning when Tyteca, who doubled to left center to lead off the frame, scored on a Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS) RBI-ground out. The run would be the final Trailblazer run of the game, but three runs would prove to be just enough.

Western Oregon broke the potential shutout in the fourth inning, plating an unearned run with an RBI-single to center field to trim the DSU lead to 3-1.

The Wolves pulled to within one run at 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning, scoring on a two-out RBI-single to left field. WOU followed up the hit with another single to put two runners on base. But Barkwell struck out the next batter to clinch the win for DSU.

Barkwell (2-0) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, striking out six WOU batters in her second complete game performance of the season. Gaffin led the way at the plate with two hits, while Gahn finished as the RBI leader with her two-run home run.

Dixie State will close play at the Cactus Classic with three games on Sunday vs. Franklin Pierce (9 a.m.), Fort Lewis (11 a.m.), and Southern Nazarene (3 p.m.).
