Trailblazer Women drop RMAC opener at Westminster

The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped an 81-63 decision on Saturday in the 2018 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener at Westminster in Salt Lake City.

The Trailblazers (3-1, 0-1 RMAC) opened the scoring with a Rashel Blazzard layup before the Griffins responded with an 8-0 run. Blazzard halted the run with a triple to cut the lead to 8-5, sparking a 12-5 run to take a 14-13 lead. The teams traded baskets over the final three minutes, and DSU took a 19-18 lead to the second frame.

Westminster used a 13-0 run in the second quarter to build a 31-22 lead midway through the period. Mariah Martin buried a 3-pointer at the 4:35 mark to pull DSU within 31-25. The Trailblazers used a 9-0 run later in the frame to retake a 38-37 lead just before halftime. The Griffins responded with a pair of free throws to take a 39-38 halftime lead.

The home team seized control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Trailblazers 20-9 to build a 59-47 lead. The teams traded baskets throughout the final stanza, and the Griffins clinched the 81-63 win.

Dixie State shot 34 percent (22-of-64) from the field, 34 percent (9-of-26) from 3-point range, and 55 percent (10-of-18) from the free throw line. Keslee Stevenson led four DSU players in double figures in her 2018-19 debut, scoring 15 points with three 3-pointers.
