DSU Women hold off Holy Names for first road victory

Four Trailblazers finish in double figures in the win

The Dixie State women's basketball team held off a late Holy Names rally to earn its first road win of the season on Monday in a 78-66 triumph inside Tobin Gymnasium in Oakland, California.

The Trailblazers (8-9, 4-6 PacWest) led by as many as 19 points in the second half, but Holy Names slowly chipped away at the lead throughout the final two quarters. The Hawks eventually pulled to within two points at 64-62 in the fourth quarter, but Dixie State closed the game on a 14-4 run to clinch the victory.

Dixie State raced to an 18-9 lead in the first quarter thanks to two 3-pointers by Matti Ventling (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas HS) and another five points by Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS). The teams traded baskets over the next four minutes and DSU took a 23-15 advantage to the second frame.

The Trailblazers built their first double-digit lead of the game when Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher, Ariz./Thatcher HS) sank a pair of free throws to stake DSU to a 25-15 lead. The game went back and forth throughout the second frame, but Dixie State would take a 43-30 lead into the halftime break after Ventling buried a triple with eight seconds remaining in the quarter. Franks and Keslee Stevenson (Willard, Utah/Box Elder HS) also connected on outside shots in the second quarter as the Trailblazers converted 7-of-19 triples during the first half.

DSU continued the 3-point barrage early in the third quarter when Stevenson and Franks each buried another triple within the first 15 seconds of the frame to extend the lead to 49-30. Holy Names responded with an 8-2 run as the Trailblazers went the next six minutes without a field goal. Morgan Myers (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) ended the scoring drought with a 3-pointer at the 3:47 mark. Franks and Ashlee Burge (Riverton, Utah/Herriman HS) then added a basket each to push the lead back to 58-40 with 2:44 remaining. The Hawks responded with an 11-0 run that extended into the fourth quarter, setting up the final-quarter dramatics.

Dixie State shot 41 percent (26-of-62) from the field, 42 percent (11-of-26) from 3-point range, and 48 percent (15-of-31) from the free throw line. Franks led four DSU players in double figures with 20 points to go with four rebounds and three assists. Moeaki added 18 points and seven assists, while Ventling finished with 15 points and Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher, Ariz./Thatcher HS) chipped in a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Trailblazers now travel to San Rafael, California, to battle Dominican on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time (6:30 p.m. MT).
