The Dixie State football team wraps up a two-game road swing on Saturday as the Trailblazers head to Rapid City, South Dakota, for a 6 p.m. showdown with South Dakota Mines at O'Harra Stadium.
Live audio coverage is scheduled on radio (ESPN Sports Radio 97.7) and internet (SportsRadio977.com), with Keric Seegmiller providing play-by-play. The Trailblazers (0-1, 0-1 RMAC) look to put last week's heartbreaking loss to New Mexico Highlands behind them as they make their third trip in as many years to the Mount Rushmore State.
LAST MEETING: Sept. 10, 2016. Dixie State amassed 475 yards of total offense (306 pass, 169 rush) in the loss, but also allowed 410 yards in the same category en route to a 31-27 loss at Legend Solar Stadium. The Trailblazers held an 8-3 lead at halftime before the floodgates opened in the second half as the teams combined for five touchdowns in the third quarter. Tyson Blackner (Draper, Utah/Alta HS) finished the game 19-of-29 for 213 yards passing and a touchdown, while rushing for another 94 yards on 11 carries. Orlando Wallace (Cathedral City, Calif./Cathedral City HS) led the receivers with 149 yards on 12 catches, to go with two rushing touchdowns. Peter Brown (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) finished the game with a team-high 12 tackles, while Colton Olson (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork HS) added nine tackles.
ALL-TIME VS. SD MINES: Saturday's game marks the fourth meeting between Dixie State and South Dakota Mines. The teams first met on Nov. 1, 2014, in St. George in a game that saw both teams score 40 points or more and amass a combined 998 yards of total offense. The game went to overtime, where the Hardrockers held on for a 41-40 victory after a DSU extra-point attempt clanged off the upright. The Trailblazers responded in 2015, rolling to a record-setting 48-25 victory on Halloween in Rapid City. The Hardrockers avenged the Halloween loss in 2016, scoring 28 points in the second half to hold on for a 31-27 win at Legend Solar Stadium. Â South Dakota Mines holds a 2-1 lead in the overall series, while the road team has claimed a victory in each of the first three matchups.
KNOW YOUR FOE: South Dakota Mines enters the game with a 1-0 overall record after a 42-27 non-conference win over William Jewell on Saturday. The Hardrockers used a big first half, finding the end zone four times in the first two frames, en route to 460 total yards in the season-opening win in Missouri. Quarterback Jake Sullivan connected on 19-of-32 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns, while throwing two interceptions. Running back Kevin Thompson finished with 81 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries, while receiver Bradnon LaBrie made a team-high seven catches for 178 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, the Hardrockers allowed 421 yards of total offense (324 pass/97 rush). Linebacker Troy Kurtz led defense with five tackles, while safety Harrison Beemiller and three others added four tackles each. Â Defensive end Andrew Karatepeyan logged the lone SD Mines sack of the game.
LAST TIME OUT:Â Dixie State football team dropped its 2017 season opener in heartbreaking fashion on Thursday, Aug. 31, falling 23-22 to New Mexico Highlands at West Las Vegas High School in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
The Trailblazers jumped out to an early lead after forcing an NMHU fumble on the first possession of the game. DSU turned the fumble into a 7-0 advantage when Ernest Quiocho (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS) plunged into the end zone from the 1-yard line.
New Mexico Highlands tied the game at 7-7 when a 75-yard drive was capped by a fumble into the end zone. Cowboys quarterback Danny Cameron completed a pass to Louis Webb at the DSU 10-yard line, but Webb fumbled after absorbing a hit from a Trailblazer defender. The ball rolled into the end zone and was recovered by the Cowboys for the score.
Dixie State responded late in the first quarter when Malik Watson (Pittsburg, Calif./Pittsburg HS) sprinted to the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown run on 4th-and-1. After a low snap on the PAT, Anthony Reyes (Queen Creek, Ariz./Dobson HS) was forced to fall on the ball, and the score remained 13-7.
The Trailblazers missed a golden opportunity to extend the lead just before halftime after Tyson Roberts (Salt Lake City, Utah/Highland HS) intercepted an NMHU pass at the Cowboys 7-yard line. After two runs and an incomplete pass into the end zone, DSU was forced to settle for a field goal. Reyes converted from 24 yards, and Dixie State took a 16-7 lead into the locker room.
DSU added to the lead midway through the third quarter when Watson found Kasey Allison (Moreno Valley, Calif./Canyon Springs HS) for a 5-yard touchdown strike, but the ensuing PAT sailed wide left and the score remained 22-7.
With a 15-point lead approaching the fourth quarter, the Trailblazers appeared to have the game in hand. But, the Cowboys turned DSU turnovers and penalties into 16 fourth-quarter points, capped by a 42-yard field goal to seal the come-from-behind win.
NEXT UP: The Trailblazers return to St. George for the 2017 home-opener vs. Black Hills State on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Legend Solar Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. MT. Â
