No. 13 Softball completes 4-game sweep of Chaminade Wednesday

Trailblazers shut out Chaminade in each game of the series, Now tied for first in the PacWest

No. 13 Dixie State completed a four-game shutout sweep of Chaminade on Wednesday, defeating the Silverswords, 1-0 and 11-0, in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Corp Field in Waipahu, Hawaii.

The Trailblazers (24-5, 10-2 PacWest) earned the 1-0 victory in a defensive struggle in game one, breaking the scoreless tie in the fifth inning. Dixie State completed the four-game sweep in game two, shutting out the Silverswords for the fourth consecutive game en route to an 11-0 victory in five innings. With the win, DSU moved back into a first-place tie in the PacWest with Azusa Pacific.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 1, Chaminade 0

After three and a half scoreless innings in a defensive battle, Chaminade looked to open the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Silverswords loaded the bases with one out after a hit-by-pitch sandwiched between two singles. But the Trailblazers retired the next two batters, including an inning-ending catch by Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) on a scorcher to shortstop.

Dixie State broke the scoreless tie in the fifth, scoring on a two-out RBI-single to center field by Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS). Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS), who opened the inning with a leadoff single through the left side, scored from second to stake DSU to a 1-0 advantage.

The Silverswords saw their best chance to tie the game in the bottom half of the fifth, getting runners to first and second with two outs. But the next batter lined out to Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) at third base, and Chaminade didn't move a runner past first base for the remainder of the game.

Bassett picked up where she left off on Tuesday, going 3-for-4 with the game's only RBI. Paulson added a 2-for-3 performance with a double in the sixth inning. Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, striking out three batters and allowing five hits en route to her sixth shutout victory of the season. Beardshear improves to 11-1 on the season to lead the PacWest in wins.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 11, Chaminade 0 (5 innings)

Dixie State opened the scoring in the top of the second in game two after both teams went down in order in the first inning. Paulson opened the inning with a leadoff double to left center field, followed by an Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) single to left field. Paulson later scored on a Chaminade throwing error after Bartholf reached on an infield single. Honey scored from third on the next play when Brenna Hinck (Tremonton, Utah/Bear River HS) singled to center field. Bartholf scored the final run of the inning on a passed ball to stake the Trailblazers to a 3-0 lead.

The Trailblazers picked up where they left off in the third inning, adding four runs on three hits and one error to push the lead to 7-0. Honey ripped a 2 RBI-double down the left field line to highlight the four-run frame for DSU.

Dixie State would add to its lead in each of the next two innings, adding two runs in both the fourth and fifth inning to clinch the 11-0 win. Riley Tyteca (Farmington, Utah/Viewmont HS) drove an RBI-double to left, followed by a Cassidy Morton (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch HS) RBI-single up the middle in the fourth, while Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS) blasted an RBI-triple down the right field line in the fifth.

Honey led the charge offensively in game two, going 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI, while five other players also logged an RBI. Alexis Barkwell (San Diego, Calif./North Medford HS) tossed a one-hit gem to earn the win in the pitcher's circle, striking out three batters to improve to 3-0 on the year.

Dixie State now heads to Laie, Hawaii, for a Friday afternoon doubleheader at BYU-Hawaii. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. Mountain Time, as the Trailblazers and Seasiders match up for the final time before BYU-H drops intercollegiate athletics upon conclusion of this season.
