DSU Women defeat Holy Names in 2016-17 season finale

Tramina Jordan's career night leads DSU to Senior Night victory

The Dixie State women's basketball team closed the 2016-17 season on Saturday with a 79-65 win over Holy Names on Senior Night inside the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers (5-21, 5-15 PacWest) honored Cassidy Carrillo (La Mirada, Calif./St. Paul HS) and Hannah Roberts (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) as the team's two seniors prior to the tipoff, then raced to an 8-0 lead behind 3-pointers from Lisa VanCampen (Morgan, Utah/Morgan HS) and Matti Ventling (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas HS). The quick start gave DSU the momentum it would need to carry the lead throughout the game and record its first wire-to-wire victory of the season. The win also marked the largest margin of victory for the Trailblazers this season.

The Hawks threatened to take the lead in the second quarter after closing the gap to 18-17 at the 9:05 mark, but Ashlee Burge (Riverton, Utah/Herriman HS) converted a layup on the other end to keep DSU in front. Gabrielle Cabanero (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley HS) later connected on a 3-pointer, followed by a pair of Burge free throws to give the Trailblazers a 40-32 halftime lead. Ventling helped keep DSU in the lead during the quarter, connecting on two more triples.

Dixie State quickly pushed the advantage to double digits in the third quarter on a Burge layup and Ventling's fourth 3-pointer of the game to push the lead to 45-32 at the 7:39 mark. HNU cut the lead to 50-41 at the 2:31 mark, but DSU closed the quarter with a 7-3 run to take a 57-44 advantage.

Holy Names made a final push to get back into the game in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 60-52 at the 7:20 mark. And then Tramina Jordan (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) took over. Jordan scored 10 consecutive points for the Trailblazers, including back-to-back 3-pointers to stretch the lead to 73-54. The Hawks later cut the lead to 77-65 with an 8-0 run, but it was too little, too late as DSU closed out the 79-65 victory.

Dixie State shot 25-of-59 (.424) from the field, 10-of-24 (.417) from beyond the arc, and 19-of-23 (.826) from the free throw line. Jordan led all scorers with a career-high 21 points to go with nine assists and six rebounds. Ventling matched her career-high with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting (4-of-7 from downtown), while Shelby Kassuba (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline HS) chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds.
