Volleyball Rallies Past Point Loma Saturday, 3-2

Chapman throws down career-high 22 kills as the Trailblazers erase 2-1 deficit to claim victory

Behind a career-high 22 kills off right arm of junior Kayla Chapman (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS), Dixie State rallied for a 3-2 road victory at Point Loma Saturday night inside the Golden Gymnasium.

The Trailblazers (10-13/8-7 PacWest) edged the Sea Lions by a 26-24 count to claim the first set, but PLNU (9-15/6-10 PacWest) answered with 25-22 and 25-19 wins over the next two frames to vault to a 2-1 lead in the match.

From there it was all Trailblazers as they used a 16-4 run to break a 9-9 tie to roll to a 25-13 set four victory to square the match at 2-2. Dixie State then closed the match with a 15-10 win in the deciding fifth set.

Along with Chapman's career night, sophomore Lauren Gammell (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork HS) tallied 12 kills along with a team-high five blocks (two solo), and senior Brette Barney (Prescott, Ariz./Prescott HS) added 10 kills. DSU collected 60 assists on its 68 kills on the night, including career-highs of 30 assists for freshman Jordyn Nelson and 24 dimes for sophomore Kara Moore (Lehi, Utah/Lehi HS).

A night after being held to a season-low hitting percentage, the Trailblazers bounced by hitting .263 over the five sets, including a .455 clip in the fourth frame.

DSU's defense also stepped up as Dixie State limited the Sea Lions to a .184 hitting percentage, thanks in large part to seven total team blocks and four Trailblazers collecting double figures in digs, led by junior libero Sid Brandon (Bountiful, Utah/Bountiful HS) with a team-high 15.

Dixie State returns home for its final three-match PacWest homestand of the 2017 season, which begins this Monday night against Hawai'i Hilo inside the DSU SAC at 6 p.m.
