DSU Women fall at Utah Valley Tuesday, 72-63

Trailblazers close non-conference play at 4-3 overall

The Dixie State women's basketball team took Utah Valley to the wire on Tuesday in Orem, Utah, but dropped a 72-63 decision inside the Lockhart Arena in the final non-conference game of the season.

The Trailblazers (4-3) jumped out to an 8-4 lead thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) and Tramina Jordan (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS), followed by a Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher, Ariz./Thatcher HS) layup. Utah Valley countered with an 11-4 run to take a 15-12 lead with 3:48 remaining in the first quarter. DSU responded with a 9-0 run, including a traditional 3-point play by Maile Richardson (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) and a Morgan Myers (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) trey, to take a 21-15 lead after the first frame.

Dixie State maintained its six-point advantage early in the second quarter when Mariah Martin (Sandy, Utah/Alta HS) connected on a triple to push the lead to 26-20. But the Wolverines seized control at the midway point of the frame with an 18-6 stretch to take a 38-32 lead into the halftime break.

Utah Valley picked up where it left off in the third quarter and hit consecutive 3-pointers to extend the lead to 44-32 less than two minutes into the second half. The Trailblazers countered with a 10-2 run, including two Jordan triples, over the next three minutes to pull to within 46-42. But UVU responded with another run and took a 56-47 lead to the fourth quarter.

The game seesawed back and forth in the fourth quarter as each team fought to gain control, until Dixie State used a 7-0 run to pull to within 65-63 with 49 seconds remaining in regulation. Richardson keyed the comeback, scoring six points while Franks and Matti Ventling (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas HS) each hit a 3-pointer during the stretch. But DSU would get no closer. The Wolverines iced the game with seven free throws down the stretch to clinch the 72-63 victory.

Dixie State shot 42 percent (21-of-49) from the field, 40 percent (12-of-30) from beyond the arc, and 69 percent (9-of-13) from the free throw line. Martin led the DSU scoring with a career-high 18 points on 4-of-4 shooting from downtown and dished out five assists. Richardson added 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Trailblazers open Pacific West Conference play on Saturday vs. Academy of Art inside the Burns Arena. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
