Second-half Seattle Pacific surge sinks DSU Men Friday, 79-70

The Dixie State men's basketball team dropped a 79-70 decision to Seattle Pacific on Friday in the first game of the Westminster Thanksgiving Classic at the Behnken Field House in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Trailblazers (2-4) built a 13-point advantage in the first half, but Seattle Pacific responded with 50 points in the second half to rally for the comeback victory.

Dixie State jumped to an 8-5 lead early in the first half behind five points from Trevor Hill (Sandy, Utah/Alta HS). The Trailblazers would later extend the lead to 19-12 near the midway point of the half after Brandon Simister (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS), Kyler Nielson (Cedar City, Utah/Cedar HS), and Brandon Miller (Sandy, Utah/Brighton HS) each connected from outside.

DSU continued its hot shooting in the first and stretched the lead to 27-17 at the 7:15 mark and later to 32-19 with 6:13 remaining until halftime. Seattle Pacific trimmed the lead to single digits at 38-29 with a 3-point play just before halftime, racing the length of the floor to convert a layup with a foul just before the first-half buzzer.

The play fueled a second-half surge for the Falcons as SPU staged a furious rally early in the second frame. DSU led 44-37 after a back and forth start to the half, but SPU responded with a 13-0 run to take a 50-44 lead. The Falcons then pushed the lead to 56-46, extending the run to a 19-2 stretch.

Dixie State closed the gap to 58-54 with 7:16 to play after Daylor Youngblood (South Jordan, Utah/Bingham HS) canned a trey and another jumper, but would never get any closer. Seattle Pacific matched each Trailblazer basket, outscoring Dixie State 21-16 over the final seven minutes to clinch the 79-70 victory.

Dixie State shot 35 percent (20-of-57) from the field, 27 percent (5-of-18) from 3-point range, and 69 percent (25-of-36) from the free throw line. Hill finished with a team-high 22 points and seven assists, while Simister added 15 points.

The Trailblazers close the weekend vs. NAIA foe Dickinson State on Saturday at 5 p.m.
