Women’s Basketball doomed by slow start vs. Colorado Mesa

The Dixie State women's basketball team was doomed by a slow start on Friday, dropping a 61-47 decision to Colorado Mesa in the 2017-18 home opener inside the Burns Arena.

Dixie State (1-2) was held to 23 percent shooting (5-of-21) from the field and scored just 16 points through the first two quarters as Colorado Mesa built a 37-16 lead at the break.

The Mavericks picked up where they left off in the third quarter, opening the frame on a 13-6 run to push the lead to 49-22 at the 3:47 mark. The Trailblazers responded with a 9-2 run that extended into the fourth cut to cut the lead to 51-31 with 9:47 remaining in the final period.

The teams traded baskets in early in the fourth quarter, and Dixie State began to slowly chip away at the CMU lead. Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher, Ariz./Thatcher HS) hit a pair of free throws, followed by Matti Venting 3-pointer to cut the lead to 54-39. After consecutive CMU baskets, the Trailblazers made a final push and trimmed the deficit to 58-47 with an 8-0 run capped by a Taylor Moeaki (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) triple at the 2:29 mark. But DSU would not score again, as the Mavericks added three more points to clinch the 61-47 victory.

Dixie State shot 33 percent (14-of-42) from the field, 26 percent (5-of-19) from 3-point range, and 87 percent (14-of-16) from the free throw line. Mariah Martin (Sandy, Utah/Alta HS) finished with a team-high 12 points, while Baldwin added 10 points and four rebounds.

The Trailblazers close the weekend with a Sunday afternoon matchup vs. Montana State-Northern. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
