Women’s Basketball drops exhibition at Utah State, 92-72

(BOX SCORE - HTML)

The Dixie State women's basketball team fell in its final game of a three-game road swing on Tuesday, dropping a 92-72 decision to Utah State in an exhibition matchup inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum arena.

Dixie State opened the scoring when Mariah Martin (Sandy, Utah/Alta HS) hit a jumper to give the Trailblazers an early 2-0 lead. Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher, Ariz./Thatcher HS) gave DSU another lead at 4-2 with a layup less than a minute later, and the visitors stayed within striking distance for most of the opening period. Keslee Stevenson (Willard, Utah/Box Elder HS) nailed two 3-pointers in the first frame to help DSU stay close, but the Aggies closed the period on a 12-4 run to push the lead to double digits at 34-22.

The Trailblazers trimmed the lead back to single digits in the second quarter at 36-28 when Martin and Maile Richardson (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) each buried a triple. USU answered with a quick 5-0 spurt, and the teams went back and forth through the rest of the frame. Morgan Myers (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) converted a layup, followed by a Baldwin free throw just before halftime to trim the USU lead to 49-35 at the break.

The game continued to seesaw in the third quarter as the Aggies attempted to extend the lead while the Trailblazers answered each attempt. Martin and Stevenson each hit a trey during the stretch, but Utah State responded with a 10-0 run that extended into the fourth quarter to build a game-high lead of 23 points at 78-55 early in the final frame. Dixie State countered with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 78-63 at the 6:36 mark, but would get no closer as the Aggies eventually clinched the 92-72 victory.

Dixie State shot 42 percent (26-of-62) from the field, 31 percent (7-of-22) from beyond the arc, and 81 percent (13-of-16) from the free throw line. Martin finished with a team-high 16 points and five rebounds, while Baldwin added 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Trailblazers now host Colorado Mesa in their 2017-18 home-opener on Friday at 5 p.m. inside the Burns Arena. DSU will also host Montana State-Northern on Sunday at 3 p.m.
