Volleyball Sweeps Away Westminster, 3-0

Trailblazers win their sixth-straight match

Dixie State pushed its winning streak to six games as the Trailblazers swept away Westminster College Wednesday night inside the Behnken Field House in Salt Lake City.

The Trailblazers (8-4) took the opening set by a 25-15 count, closing on a 12-3 run after the Griffins (2-11) trimmed a four-point DSU advantage down to one point midway through frame.

Dixie State looked as if it would cruise to a quick 2-0 lead in the match with a 20-15 advantage in set two, but Westminster battled back to pull even at 22-22. DSU answered with consecutive kills from senior Delayne Daniel (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleaseant Grove HS) and sophomore Taylor Duryea (Logan, Utah/Sky View HS) to get to set point on serve at 24-22, but again the Griffins came back to knot the set at 24-24. However the Trailblazers scored the final two points of the stanza as Duryea threw down two of her team-high eight kills to give DSU a 26-24 set win and a commanding two-set lead.

The Griffins jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in set three, but the Trailblazers responded with a decisive 16-4 run to go up 19-10 and they never looked back as Dixie State closed the match with a 25-16 set win.

Dixie State hit .278 for the match and collected 41 kills. Daniel finished with six kills and eight digs, while Duryea added seven digs and two aces to go with her eight kills. Senior Kailey Frei (Orem, Utah/Timpanogos HS) dished out a game-high 27 assists and sophomore libero Sidney Brandon (Bountiful, Utah/Bountiful HS) picked up a game-high 18 digs as DSU's defense finished with 49 digs and nine blocks, and held the Griffins to a .108 hitting percentage.

DSU returns home for three-straight PacWest games, starting with a date vs. Chaminade this Saturday at 6 p.m., inside the DSU Student Activities Center.
