GAME NOTES (PDF)

The Dixie State football team hits the road for the second time in as many weeks as the Trailblazers travel to Ellensburg, Washington, for a non-conference matchup on Saturday with former GNAC foe Central Washington at Tomlinson Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Pacific Time (2 p.m. MT), as the Trailblazers look to end a two-game losing skid and pick up their first road win of the season. Live audio coverage is scheduled on radio (ESPN Sports Radio 97.7) and internet (Southern Utah Live), with Keric Seegmiller providing play-by-play. Fans can also watch the game online at the CWU Stretch Internet Portal.

LAST MEETING: Nov. 14, 2015. Dixie State dropped its 2015 season and GNAC conference finale to the Wildcats, falling 34-28 despite three rushing touchdowns from DeJon Coleman (Los Angeles, Calif./Arleta HS) and five CWU turnovers. DSU led 28-19 early in the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats scored two touchdowns in the final 14 minutes, including a 12-play, 75-yard drive for the go-ahead score, taking 8:40 off the clock. Dixie got the ball back and after a sack, Blake Barney (St. George, Utah/Dixie HS) found Nate Stephens (Redding, Calif./Shasta HS) for a miraculous 23-yard reception to set DSU up with a first down at the CWU 36-yard line. But that would be as close as DSU would get to the end zone as the Wildcat defense pressured Barney into a fumble and two incompletions which ended the DSU drive and season.

ALL-TIME VS. CWU: Saturday's game marks the 17th meeting between Dixie State and Central Washington. The two teams first met in St. George on Aug. 30, 2008, with CWU grabbing a 44-38 victory. The Wildcats went on to win the next seven games between the teams, and DSU recorded its first win in the series at home on Oct. 6, 2012, outlasting CWU 29-21. Dixie State notched its second victory in the series on Sept. 5, 2015, rushing for 404 yards and six touchdowns en route to a 49-20 win.  The Wildcats lead the series 14-2, including an 8-0 mark at Tomlinson Stadium.

KNOW YOUR FOE: Central Washington enters the game with a 1-2 overall record and a 1-1 mark in GNAC play. The Wildcats opened the season with a 43-26 loss at Division I foe Portland State. CWU earned its first victory of the 2016 season the following week with a 41-20 win over Western Oregon. The Wildcats fell, 27-17, to No. 16 Azusa Pacific last week, after leading the Cougars 17-13 in the fourth quarter.

CWU averages 406.3 yards per game on offense (151 rush, 255 pass), led by senior quarterback Justin Lane, who ranks second in the GNAC in passing with 255.0 yards per game. Senior receiver Jesse Zalk leads the GNAC in receiving with 17 catches for 249 yards (83.0 per game).

Defensively, the Wildcats allow 405.3 yards per game (145 rush, 260 pass). Junior defensive back Jackson Huerta is tied for second in the GNAC with 34 tackles. Junior linebacker Kevin Haynes is close behind with 31 tackles.

COACHING STAFF: Head coach Shay McClure is in his first season as DSU head coach after serving as Director of Defense last season. McClure is joined by offensive coordinator Reilly Murphy and defensive coordinator Shawn Howe on a staff that features four returning coaches from last season and eight newcomers to the staff for the 2016 season.

McClure, Howe, defensive line coach Dustin Sobieraj, and assistant defensive backs coach Marcus Graves represent the four returning coaches, while Murphy, offensive line coach Keola Loo, wide receivers coach Justin Mesa, offensive assistant Jose Flores, offensive assistant Mitch Glasmann, offensive assistant Jake Hardcastle (Midway, Utah/Wasatch HS), defensive backs coach Izaiah Williams, and defensive assistant Ryan Williams represent the eight newcomers to the staff. The coaching staff was finalized prior to spring practices, giving the current staff a full spring camp leading to into fall camp and the beginning of the season.

NEXT UP: Dixie State returns to Legend Solar Stadium to host Western State Colorado on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 1 p.m.
