McCloy's Late Goal Propels Trailblazers Past Westminster College Tuesday

Junior forward scores her third goal in as many matches in the victory

Junior forward Darian McCloy (Herriman, Utah/Herriman HS) scored her third goal in as many matches late in the 86th-minute, and it proved to be the game-winner as Dixie State defeated Westminster College, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at Dumke Field in Salt Lake City.

After being held to one shot on goal in the first half, the Trailblazers (2-3-0) created a pair of early scoring chances in the second stanza on shots from junior Montana Hadley (Bountiful, Utah/Viewmont HS) and senior Alexis Torres (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde HS), but Griffin netminder Breanna Empey managed to stop both DSU shot attempts. Freshman Kilee Lamb (Smithfield, Utah/Sky View HS) also had a good look at the game's first goal deep in the 71st-minute, but again Empey denied the chance to keep the match scoreless.

Dixie State kept up the offensive pressure in the final seven minutes of regulation as McCloy fired a shot that hit the cross bar midway through the 84th-minute. However the junior did manage to come through 1:13 later as she corralled a redirected Hadley free kick and fired home a shot from 6-yards out to put the Trailblazers on top at 1-0.

Westminster College (3-1-0) mounted one more charge in the 88th-minute when Alicia May sent a corner kick into the DSU penalty area, but Emily Pascua's header attempt sailed high over the cross bar. DSU managed to keep the Griffins at bay the rest of the way to claim the road victory.

"We definitely didn't have the start we wanted, but luckily had a better performance in the second half," DSU Head Coach Kacey Bingham said. "Our focus today was cutting down on our turnovers and the team did a good job of accomplishing that. Darian [McCloy] has been clutch in finding the goal in our past few games."

DSU outshot Westminster 7-5 on the afternoon, including a 5-3 edge on goal. Trailblazer senior keeper Angelica Ciucci (Stockholm, Sweden/Thorildsplans Gymnasium) got the start and made two saves in the first half, while freshman netminder Felicity Tarr (Tucson, Ariz./Mountain View Marana HS) played a scoreless second half to earn her first collegiate victory in goal.

Dixie State will move on to play an exhibition match at NCAA Division-I foe Southern Utah this Saturday, Sept. 17, in Cedar City beginning at 1 p.m.
