Men's Soccer Powers Past University of Mary, 5-0

DSU ties school-record with five goals - all scored by freshmen - as DSU claims first win of the season

Freshman midfielder Jandir Porta (West Valley City, Utah/Hunter HS) tallied two goals as part of a five-goal explosion as Dixie State claimed its first win of the season with a decisive 5-0 result vs. the University of Mary Sunday at the Montana State Billings Rimrock Men's Soccer Classic.

DSU tied a school record with its five goals on the day, all of which were scored by freshmen, beginning in the 21st minute when Christian Hall (Layton, Utah/Northridge HS) netted his first collegiate goal from 5-yards out on a two-touch set from senior Sean Jenne (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) and sophomore Gabby Medina (Mesquite, Nev./Virgin Valley HS). Porta followed with his first career goal just 38 seconds remaining in the first half when he fired home a rebound from the top of the box to stake DSU to a 2-0 halftime edge.

The Trailblazers (1-3-0) tallied three more goals in the second half, the first came 10 minutes in when Angel Estrada (Pasadena, Calif./Pasadena HS) advanced the ball into the box, beat two defenders and fired a shot past the Marauder (4-1-0) keeper to the far post for his first collegiate goal.

Dixie State then put the match away with two goals in the span of 1:14, when Michael Cardenas (St. George, Utah/Pine View HS) took a cross from junior Ather Dawood (Tucson, Ariz.) and tucked the ball home. Porta then put an exclamation point on the match when he bicycle-kicked home a half-volley feed from fellow freshman Moises Medina (Mesquite, Nev./Virgin Valley HS) and scored from 15-yards outs.

"We played to our capability and we saw things we've been working on start to develop today," DSU Head Coach Tim Busen said. "I was very proud of our team."

Porta's two-goal effort on the day earned him tournament Offensive MVP honors. DSU held a decisive 24-8 edge in shots, including a 13-4 count on frame. Senior goalkeeper Bradley Trella (Chandler, Ariz./Chandler HS) (W, 1-3-0) and freshman reserve Zach Nielson (West Point, Utah/Northridge HS) combined to stop all four Marauder shots on goal en route to the shut out win.

Dixie State opens the home portion of its 2016 schedule against Northwest Nazarene this Saturday, Sept. 17, at 7:30 p.m., at Legend Solar Stadium.
