No. 14 Softball rolls to doubleheader sweep of Chaminade

Feickert throws no-hitter, Woodfall homers twice

The No. 14 Dixie State softball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Chaminade at Karl Brooks Field on Wednesday, extending its win streak to 12 games in the process.

The Red Storm (25-7, 13-3 PacWest) pounded out 27 hits with no errors on the day en route to the sweep. Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) threw her first complete-game no-hitter of the season, and Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) hit two home runs as DSU recorded an 8-0, six-inning win in Game One and a 16-4, five-inning win in Game Two.

"We swung the bat well today and had good at-bats," head coach Randy Simkins said. "We strung hits together, scored some runs with two outs, and we were good defensively. We put ourselves in a position to win. When you don't give teams extra outs and you make them earn everything, you've got a good chance to win."

GAME ONE

Feickert set the tone in Game One, striking out six batters in the first three innings. Dixie State opened the scoring in the bottom of the third when Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) doubled down the left field line, scoring Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) from second.

Feickert went back to work in the top of the fourth inning, snaring a line drive back to the pitcher's circle for the first out. Feickert then struck out the next two batters, setting up some offensive fireworks. Woodfall stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fourth for her second at-bat of the game and sent the 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for her first home run of the season, giving the Storm a 2-0 lead.

DSU added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs to extend the lead to 6-0. Bassett started things off with an infield single and later scored on a throwing error. Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS). Yung's single set up a Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) single, sending Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS) into the game as a pinch runner. Woodfall stepped to the plate again, and this time sent the first pitch over the same spot in center field for a two-run home run.

The Red Storm ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Kristie Johnson (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) and Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) recorded back-to-back RBI singles to bring the score to 8-0.

Woodfall led the way at the plate in Game One, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI. Feickert earned the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 13-3, matching her season-high of 11 strikeouts en route to a no-hitter.

GAME TWO

Dixie State picked up where it left off in the bottom of the first of Game Two, opening a 7-0 lead in the first frame, all with two outs after Bassett walked and Yung grounded into a double play to start things off. Gonzalez drew a walk after the double play, followed by a Paulson single and a Woodfall walk. With two outs and the bases loaded, Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) belted a three-run triple to center field, just her second hit of the season and her first three RBI. Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) followed up the triple with a two-run home run to left field. Yung capped the seven-run inning with a two-run single to center field.

The Storm added to the lead in the bottom of the second, after Chaminade went down in order in the top half of the inning. Paulson opened the inning with a single through the left side, followed by a double down the left field line by Gaffin. Beardshear singled, scoring Paulson, and Gaffin later scored when Beardshear was thrown out at second and Johnson reached first on a fielder's choice. After two innings, DSU led 9-0.

Chaminade threatened to score in the top of the third, when the leadoff batter doubled to center field, but the DSU defense wouldn't allow it. Paulson caught a line drive at first on the next pitch and fired to Gaffin covering second base from shortstop for a double play. Beardshear struck out the next batter, and the Storm escaped unscathed.

Dixie State made it a 10-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, when Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) doubled down the left field line, scoring Yung from third.

The Silverswords answered with four runs in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI-single and a three-run home run over the center field wall to close the gap to 10-4. But the momentum didn't stay with Chaminade for long.

The Red Storm added six more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on RBI from Kaitlyn Delange (Cedar City, Utah/Canyon View HS), Gonzalez, Summer Simkins (St. George, Utah/Dixie HS), Gaffin, and Madi Dove (Cypress, Calif./Cypress HS) (2) to extend the lead to 16-4 and seal the victory.

Gaffin led the way at the plate in Game Two, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and four RBI, while Beardshear finished at 2-for-2 with three RBI. Beardshear earned the win in the pitcher's circle, striking out four with no walks to improve to 8-2.

Dixie State will host Hawai'i Hilo next Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Karl Brooks Field.
