Women’s Hoops Storms past Concordia on Senior Night

Mann moves into second all-time in scoring

The Dixie State women's basketball team sent out its four seniors in winning style on Saturday with an 88-62 victory over Concordia on Senior Night at the Burns Arena. With the win, the Red Storm finish the 2015-16 season with a 9-17 overall record and a 9-11 mark in Pacific West Conference play, winning six out of their last seven games.

Three of the four seniors scored in double figures, as Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, Utah/Emery) finished with 26 points and tied her career-high with 26 rebounds to move into second in DSU women's basketball all-time scoring with 1,062 career points. Chermayne Moore (Pinole, Calif./Hercules) recorded 19 points and four assists on 5-of-9 shooting from outside. Brianna Jessop (Hyrum, Utah/Mountain Crest) added 11 points and three rebounds, while Leslie Tademy (Phoenix, Ariz./South Mountain) finished with six points and dished out a game-high eight assists, breaking her previous single-season assists record with 138 assists this season.

Dixie State led wire-to-wire, as Aliya Davis (Everett, Wash./Woodcreek) buried a triple to open the scoring in the first quarter to give the Storm a lead they would not concede. The 3-pointer sparked a 9-2 run over the first two minutes of the game. Gabrielle Cabanero (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) gave DSU its first double-digit lead of the game at 18-7 with a layup, and the Storm maintained the 11-point advantage through the rest of the quarter. Cassidy Carrillo (La Mirada, Calif./St. Paul) connected on her first trey of the season as time expired to push the lead to 27-16.

Like the first quarter, the Red Storm opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run to push the lead to 36-18 after Moore made back-to-baskets, including a 3-pointer with seven minutes remaining. The teams traded baskets through the rest of the quarter, and DSU led 44-29 at halftime.

Dixie State built its first 20-point lead of the game three minutes into the third quarter when Moore knocked down her third triple of the contest to push the lead to 53-32. Mann went to work later in the third quarter, scoring nine consecutive points for DSU to help close the period with a 69-50 lead.

The fourth quarter was more of the same, as the Red Storm continued to fire on all cylinders. Moore nailed two more 3-pointers in the period, and Mann matched her career-high rebounding mark, grabbing her 26th rebound in the final period.

"The energy and chemistry in the building was at an all-time high tonight for our seniors," head coach Jenny Thigpin said. "Each senior played well and scored to finish on a positive note. Winning the last five out of six games shows the growth the team has had throughout the season. I'm extremely proud of how well we closed out the season."

Dixie State shot 47 percent (32-of-67) from the field, 47 percent from beyond the arc, and 50 percent (14-of-28) from the free throw line. Mann finishes her career at Dixie State as the career, single-season, and single-game rebounding leader and second in all-time scoring. Mann also finishes the season with 522 points, just the second player in DSU women's basketball history to score 500 points in a single season. Tademy finishes her career as the all-time assists leader with 274 assists.
