Trevor Hill (Sandy, Utah/Alta HS) and
Josh Fuller (Rexburg, Idaho/Madison HS) led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points apiece as Dixie State handled Holy Names, 91-67, in Pacific West Conference play Monday night in the Burns Arena. The Storm swept their five-game homestand and has won nine of their last 11 overall to move to 14-8, 11-5 in conference play.
The Storm led wire-to-wire and looked as if they were on their way to another easy win in the early going as Fuller threw down a two-handed slam dunk, which sparked an 11-2 run that turned one-point lead into a 29-19 advantage with 6:41 to play in the first half.
However the Hawks (4-22/3-15 PacWest) took advantage of 13 first half Storm turnovers, including five coming after DSU's run, to stay within striking distance as Dixie State saw its lead trimmed down to six before escaping to the locker room with a 38-31 lead.
Dixie State came out in the second half and took immediate control as the Storm opened the stanza with an 18-8 run to lead 56-39 with 14:06 remaining. Hill scored seven of DSU's points in the run as he forced the issue offensively as he got to the line four times and scored on a put back.
DSU wound up outscoring the Hawks 31-14 over the first nine-plus minutes of the period as sophomore
Brandon Simister (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) hit a pair of 3-pointers, and reserve forward
Quincy Mathews (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) chipped in five points off the bench, as DSU took its biggest lead of the game at 69-45 at the 10:46 mark and never looked back.
For the second-straight game all five DSU starters scored in double figures as the Storm enjoyed its best balanced-scoring game of the season. Hill hit on 5-of-8 from the floor and 6-of-10 from the line to tally his 16 points, and added a season-high 12 rebounds to post his first double-double of the year. Meanwhile Fuller scored 10 of his 16 points after halftime and finished 7-of-10 shooting for the game.
Simister added 15 points, including 3-of-3 from the perimeter, and dished out a career-high tying seven assists, while
Mason Sawyer (West Jordan, Utah/West Jordan HS) chipped in 10 points with six rebounds, three assists and three steals. In addition, senior
Mark Ogden Jr. (Spring Valley, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) notched his third-straight double-double and fourth in his last five games overall with 10 points and 10 boards. Ogden Jr. (407 rebounds) also became just the third player in Dixie State's NCAA Division II era to record 400 career rebounds.
"Trevor [Hill] took over in the second half," DSU Head Coach
Jon Judkins said. "I told him at halftime that I didn't care if he got five charges, just keep getting to the rim. [Trevor] was attacking the basket and he got to the line 10 times tonight just by staying aggressive. I thought [Brandon] Simister shot the ball really well and the fact that all five of our starters scored in double figures means we were sharing [the ball], it's nice to see all those double-digits."
Dixie State shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) from the floor, including an efficient 6-of-12 (.500) from the perimeter, and went to the foul line a season-high 41 times (31-of-42; .738), with 32 of those charity tosses coming in the second half. DSU also outrebounded the Holy Names 53-28, including an 18-10 count on the offensive glass, and the Storm committed just four turnovers in the second half to finish 17 for the game.
"I thought we could get out and run with [Holy Names] and get a lot of easy baskets, but the thing that really stuck out to me in the first half were those 13 turnovers," Judkins noted. "In the second half we did a lot better job of taking care of the basketball."
Dante Robinson led the Hawks with a game-high 20 points, while Jonathan Cortez added 13 points off the bench. HNU shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the field, but were just 5-of-20 (.200) from beyond the arc.
Dixie State heads back out on the road for the final time this regular season with another three-game in five-day stretch in northern California, beginning with a return game at Holy Names this Saturday, Feb. 20. DSU will then travel across the Golden Gate Bridge to play at Dominican on Monday, Feb. 22, before closing out the road trip at Fresno Pacific on Wednesday, Feb. 24.
