Storm women snap losing skid with win over Fresno Pacific

The Dixie State women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak Saturday with a 63-55 win over Fresno Pacific at the Burns Arena.

The Red Storm (5-16, 5-10 PacWest) opened the game on a 13-2 run to seize momentum in the first quarter. Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, Utah/Emery) scored back-to-back baskets and Ashlee Burge (Riverton, Utah/Herriman) added four points in the run. Fresno Pacific would cut the lead to seven at 15-8, but DSU pushed the lead back to 20-10 after the first quarter.

The Storm went cold in the second quarter, scoring just eight points while The Sunbirds began to chip away at the lead. After FPU ended the first half on an 8-0 run, DSU led by just one point at 28-27 at halftime.

The teams went back and forth in the third quarter and took turns gaining and conceding the lead, until the Red Storm decided enough was enough.  Trailing 37-34 with 5:44 to play in the period, Tramina Jordan (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial) hit a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer to spark a 13-0 run for Dixie State.

FPU would fight back again in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to one point on multiple occasions, but DSU answered each time it needed to secure the victory.

"I'm proud of our energy and effort tonight," head coach Jenny Thigpin said. "We're finally starting to play Dixie State basketball. We still need to put together four complete quarters of defensive sound basketball, but this gives us momentum heading into Monday's game (vs. Holy Names)."

Dixie State shot 39 percent (21-of-53) from the field, 23 percent (3-of-13) from beyond the arc, and 66 percent (18-of-27) from the free throw line. Mann led the way with 23 points and 18 rebounds, tying the DSU single season double-doubles record with her 16th of the season. Jordan added 10 points and three assists.

The Red Storm close out their five-game homestand on Monday with the first of consecutive games with Holy Names. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
