Women’s Basketball drops overtime heartbreaker to NDNU

Three DSU players set career highs in loss

The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Notre Dame de Namur at the Burns Arena on Saturday, falling 88-82 in overtime.

The Trailblazers (0-10, 0-4 PacWest) built a 10-point lead at 15-5 in the first quarter behind 3-pointers from Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) and Matti Ventling (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas HS). NDNU answered with its own 3-pointer with 1:53 remaining in the period before Tramina Jordan (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) connected on a jumper push the lead to 17-8 after one quarter.

The Argonauts opened the second quarter on a 14-0 run to take the lead at 22-17, as DSU went scoreless for the first six minutes of the period. Lisa VanCampen (Morgan, Utah/Morgan HS) ended the drought with a layup at the 3:44 mark to cut the lead to 22-19. Ventling pulled the Trailblazers to within one point at 24-23 with a triple, but NDNU responded with a 6-2 run to push the lead to 30-25 at halftime.

Notre Dame de Namur built an eight-point lead at 42-34 midway through the third quarter, but DSU answered with a 6-0 run highlighted by four points from Kili Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) to cut the lead to 42-40 with 2:32 remaining in the quarter. NDNU countered with an 8-3 run to push the lead to 50-43 at the end of the period.

The teams went back and forth through the first half of the fourth quarter before Dixie State used a 14-5 run, capped by a Kili Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) trey, over a four-minute span to take a 68-66 lead with 1:27 remaining in regulation. The game again went back and forth over the next few possessions until DSU took the lead at 72-70 on a Shelby Kassuba (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline HS) layup with eight seconds remaining. The Argonauts answered again, nailing a shot from just inside the left wing to tie the game at 72-72, and a Jordan half-court heave fell short as time expired, sending the game to overtime.

NDNU scored the first two baskets in the overtime period to take a 76-72 lead with 4:08 remaining. Kassuba answered with a jumper from the free throw line to cut the lead to 76-74, but DSU would get no closer. The Argonauts used a 9-2 run over the next three minutes to build a lead they would not relinquish.

Dixie State shot 41 percent (28-of-67) from the field, 44 percent (12-of-27) from beyond the arc, and 66 percent (14-of-21) from the free throw line. Jordan led four DSU players in double figures with 18 points and 11 assists (both career highs) for her first double-double of the season. Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) finished with a career-high 15 points and eight rebounds, while Ventling added 14 points and nine rebounds, and VanCampen finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
