The ThunderWolves also rank second in the RMAC in scoring defense, allowing 18.2 points per game. Linebacker Brandon Payer leads the defensive attack and ranks fifth in the RMAC with 78 tackles to go with one interception. FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Dixie State can clinch its first winning season in the Division II era (2006-present) with a win on Saturday.
RECORD SETTERS: DSU set the Division II era program record for wins in a single-season with its fifth win of the year on Saturday at Adams State, eclipsing the previous mark of four (2008, 2009, 2013). Individually, senior running back DeJon Coleman (Los Angeles, Calif./Arleta HS) rushed for 206 yards and a touchdown on Saturday, becoming the DSU career rushing (1,505 yards) and career rushing touchdowns (15) leader.
RECORD CHASERS: The Trailblazers have rushed for 2,069 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2016, just 314 yards and one touchdown behind the 2015 team, which sits atop both team single-season rushing/rushing touchdowns lists.
Redshirt freshman running back Clifford Simms (Compton, Calif./St. John Bosco HS) has rushed for 759 yards and seven touchdowns this season, landing him at No. 7 on the DSU career rushing yards list and at No. 5 on the career rushing touchdowns list. Additionally, Simms sits at No. 3 on both the single-season rushing yards and single-season rushing touchdowns lists, 89 yards and three touchdowns behind Coleman, who sits atop both lists.
COACHING STAFF: Head coach Shay McClure is in his first season as DSU head coach after serving as Director of Defense last season. McClure is joined by offensive coordinator Reilly Murphy and defensive coordinator Shawn Howe on a staff that features four returning coaches from last season and eight newcomers to the staff for the 2016 season
McClure, Howe, defensive line coach Dustin Sobieraj, and assistant defensive backs coach Marcus Graves represent the four returning coaches, while Murphy, offensive line coach Keola Loo, wide receivers coach Justin Mesa, offensive assistant Jose Flores, offensive assistant Mitch Glasmann, offensive assistant Jake Hardcastle (Midway, Utah/Wasatch HS), defensive backs coach Izaiah Williams, and defensive assistant Ryan Williams represent the eight newcomers to the staff. The coaching staff was finalized prior to spring practices, giving the current staff a full spring camp leading to into fall camp and the beginning of the season.
UP NEXT: Dixie State returns to Legend Solar Stadium for the 2016 season finale in its first matchup with Fort Lewis since 2006 on Saturday, Nov. 12.
