Three Trailblazers tallied double figures in kills to lead Dixie State to a 3-1 victory over Point Loma in the regular season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon inside the DSU Student Activities Center. With the win, DSU finishes the 2016 campaign at 17-11, 13-7 in Pacific West Conference play, while the Sea Lions fell to 11-18, 9-11 in league action.
DSU led wire-to-wire in set one thanks to a 10-4 run to open match. The Sea Lions managed to cut the deficit to 16-15, but the Trailblazers rattled off four-straight points to take a 25-21 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Point Loma rebounded to take set two, 25-22, to square things at 1-1, and held a decisive 14-9 lead midway through the third frame, but DSU battled back with a 9-4 spurt to pull even at 18-18. Dixie State then completed the rally by scoring seven of the final 10 points of the stanza to win it 25-21 to take at a 2-1 set advantage. DSU continued to ride the momentum in the decisive fourth set as the Trailblazers never trailed en route to a 25-20 win to close out the match.
Senior outside hitter
Delayne Daniel (Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleaseant Grove HS) wrapped up her two-year career in style as she threw down a game-high 17 kills, including kills on three of DSU's final four points, and collected 15 digs to post her team-high 17
th double-double of the year. Daniel's 17 kills also moved her into fourth-place on DSU's career kills list (657), while she became just the fourth player in DSU's NCAA-era to amass 600 career digs (600).
Senior middle blocker
Lindsay Garrett (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) closed out her brilliant four-year career with 16 kills and hit .387 for the match overall, which padded her school-record career hitting percentage (.275). Garrett added two digs and four total blocks, including one solo stop, which moved her into sole possession of fourth place on DSU's career solo blocks list (25).
Senior setter
Kailey Frei (Orem, Utah/Timpanogos HS)l just missed her seventh double-double of the year as she tallied a game-high 49 assists to go with nine digs and six kills. Frei, who became DSU's career assists leader two weeks ago at home vs. Dominican, finished her four-year career with 2,486 assists. Senior
Megan Huddleston (Provo, Utah/Timpview HS) collected one assist and nine digs in her final match, while junior
Malary Marshall (Hurricane, Utah/Hurricane HS) added 10 kills, two digs and three total blocks, and sophomore
Taylor Duryea (Logan, Utah/Sky View HS) had eight kills.
DSU hit .222 for the match with 60 kills, while the defense held PLNU to a .175 hitting percentage thanks to 81 digs, including a game-high 30 for sophomore
Sidney Brandon (Bountiful, Utah/Bountiful HS), and eight total team blocks.
Brianna Sizemore led the Sea Lions with 15 kills and 10 digs.
