ALL-TIME VS. CHADRON STATE: Saturday's game marks the first time Dixie State and Chadron State have met on the gridiron.
KNOW YOUR FOE: Chadron State enters the game with a 1-4 overall record and a 1-3 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Eagles opened the season with a 17-10 win over Fort Lewis in Chadron. CSC fell, 47-33, on the road the following week at nationally-ranked Colorado Mesa. Since then, the Eagles have dropped three more games to Western State, Adams State, and Humboldt State, by a combined 14 points.
Chadron State averages 365 yards (215.6 pass, 149.4 rush) per game on offense. Redshirt sophomore TD Stein and junior Matt Vinson have split time at quarterback through the first five games of the season. Stein completed 20-of-38 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns before Vinson took over in week three, completing 84-of-150 passes for 840 yards and five touchdowns. Receiver Matt Gray is tied for first in the RMAC in receptions per game, averaging 7.2 catches per game for 310 yards and two touchdowns on the season.
The Eagles allow 383.6 yards per game defensively, but lead the RMAC in pass defense, allowing just 180.2 yards per game through the air. Linebacker Courtland Joshua leads the defensive attack with a team-high 37 tackles, while defensive lineman Collin Eisenman has recorded 33 tackles and linebacker Keenan Johnson sits at 30 tackles on the season.
ALL-TIME VS. THE RMAC: In its 10-year NCAA Division II history, Dixie State has matched up with seven current RMAC schools (Adams State, Black Hills State, Colorado Mesa, Fort Lewis, New Mexico Highlands, South Dakota Mines, and Western State) for a total of 20 games against those opponents. The Trailblazers hold a 6-14 record in those games, recording victories over Adams State (2), Colorado Mesa, New Mexico Highlands, South Dakota Mines, and Western State.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior punter Corey Stens (Corona, Calif./Santiago HS) was named RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday for his performance in the win over Western State. Stens amassed 237 yards punting on five attempts, including a season-long of 56 yards in the third quarter. Stens added a punt of 53 yards in the fourth quarter, marking his third punt of over 50 yards in the game. Stens averaged 47.4 yards per punt and placed four punts inside the 20-yard line, including two punts inside the 5-yard line. Stens currently leads the RMAC in punting, averaging 40.6 yards per punt.
COACHING STAFF: Head coach Shay McClure is in his first season as DSU head coach after serving as Director of Defense last season. McClure is joined by offensive coordinator Reilly Murphy and defensive coordinator Shawn Howe on a staff that features four returning coaches from last season and eight newcomers to the staff for the 2016 season.
McClure, Howe, defensive line coach Dustin Sobieraj, and assistant defensive backs coach Marcus Graves represent the four returning coaches, while Murphy, offensive line coach Keola Loo, wide receivers coach Justin Mesa, offensive assistant Jose Flores, offensive assistant Mitch Glasmann, offensive assistant Jake Hardcastle (Midway, Utah/Wasatch HS), defensive backs coach Izaiah Williams, and defensive assistant Ryan Williams represent the eight newcomers to the staff. The coaching staff was finalized prior to spring practices, giving the current staff a full spring camp leading to into fall camp and the beginning of the season.
NEXT UP: Dixie State heads to Grand Junction, Colorado, for a matchup with nationally-ranked Colorado Mesa on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m.
