Football turned back by Colorado Mines

The Dixie State football team saw its three-game win streak come to an end Saturday, falling 62-27 to Colorado Mines at Legend Solar Stadium.

The Trailblazers (4-4, 4-3 RMAC) conceded over 500 yards of total offense for the first time this season, conceding 582 yards (314 pass, 268 rush) to the Orediggers en route to the loss.

CSM struck first on the game's opening drive, scoring on a 25-yard run up the middle to cap an eight-play, 75-yard drive.

Dixie State responded on the ensuing drive, scoring on a two-yard plunge by redshirt junior fullback Ernest Quiocho (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS). The touchdown capped a 15-play, 75-yard drive that took 6:33 off the clock. However, a two-point try was unsuccessful and the Orediggers maintained a 7-6 lead with 6:18 remaining in the first quarter.

Colorado Mines wasted no time extending its lead, going 75 yards in less than three minutes on its next possession to push the lead back to 14-6.

Unfazed, the Trailblazers used a steady rushing attack to set up a 20-yard read-option run into the end zone by freshman quarterback Josh Thompson (Ontario, Calif./Colony HS) to cut the lead to 14-13 with 14:41 remaining in the second quarter.

The Orediggers responded with 21 unanswered points, scoring two touchdowns before halftime and one early in the third quarter to push the lead to 35-13 with 11:12 remaining in the third quarter.
DSU pulled back to within two scores on its next drive, going 72 yards in six plays, capped by a 49-yard touchdown by sophomore running back Orlando Wallace (Cathedral City, Calif./Cathedral City HS) from the wildcat formation to cut the lead to 35-20 at the midway point of the third quarter.

CSM scored on its next drive to push the lead back to 42-20 before the Trailblazers responded with their longest touchdown pass of the season. Facing a 2nd-and-12 from their own 33-yard line, Wallace got the defense to bite on a fake handoff and fired a strike to sophomore tight end Cooper Robinson (St. George, Utah/Snow Canyon HS) for a 67-yard touchdown down the middle of the field. The touchdown pulled DSU to within 42-27 and marked Robinson's first collegiate touchdown. But the Trailblazers would get no closer.

Colorado Mines responded with three touchdowns and 20 unanswered points to seal the victory.

Dixie State finished with 320 yards of total offense (213 rush, 107 pass). Wallace led the attack with 79 yards rushing and one touchdown on eight carries, while throwing for 76 yards and another touchdown. Freshman defensive back Mike Jones (San Diego, Calif./Mount Miguel HS) led the defense with nine tackles, while senior defensive lineman Keanu Foki (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Farrington HS) added seven tackles and one sack. Junior defensive back Colton Olson (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork HS), who leads the Trailblazers in tackles, missed most the of the game after being called for targeting midway through the first quarter.

DSU travels to Alamosa, Colorado, on Saturday for its first matchup with Adams State since 2012. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
