Women's hoops doomed by slow start at BYU-Hawaii

Four DSU players finish in double figures in the loss

The Dixie State women's basketball team looked to return from the Hawaiian Islands with a winning record on the three-game trip, but a slow start doomed the Storm women in a 92-79 loss at BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday.

DSU (4-13, 4-7 PacWest) went nearly four minutes scoreless to start the game while the Seasiders raced to a 13-0 lead with 6:35 remaining in the first quarter. Brianna Jessop (Hyrum, Utah/Mountain Crest) got the Storm on the board with a layup on a pass from Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, Utah/Emery) 30 seconds later, sparking a 14-3 run for the Red Storm over the next four minutes to pull within 16-14. BYU-H responded with a 7-0 run and led 23-16 after one quarter of play.

Dixie State struck first in the second quarter on a Sandria Bolden (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) 3-pointer to pull within 23-19, but BYU-Hawaii answered with three consecutive triples of its own to push the lead to double-digits at 32-21 at the 7:07 mark of the period.  The Storm cut the lead to six points on two different occasions, but could get no closer in the quarter. The Seasiders responded with another 7-0 run and took a 45-36 lead into the halftime break.

In a mirror image of the first quarter, the Seasiders pushed the lead to 13 at 49-36 less than a minute into the third quarter. And, like the first quarter, the Storm responded with a big run, this time a 14-2 run to cut the lead to 51-50 with 5:49 to play in the quarter. However, the Seasiders answered again, this time with a 12-3 run to push the lead back to double digits at 64-53 with 1:52 to play in the third quarter. The teams traded baskets over the final two minutes and BYU-H took a 68-56 lead into the final periodBYU-Hawaii quickly pushed the lead to 15 points at 73-58 early in the fourth quarter. DSU slowly chipped away at the lead and used a 9-3 run over the next three minutes to cut the lead back to single digits at 76-67 with 5:33 remaining, but would get no closer as the Seasiders extended the lead back to 88-71 and held on for the victory.

"We lost it on the defensive end tonight," head coach Jenny Thigpin said. "We've got to do a better job of communicating in transition defense and getting stops. We started slow and could never get back into it mentally. It's a tough loss, but we can't dwell on it too long. We need to bounce back quickly with Hawai'i Pacific coming to our house on Saturday."

Dixie State shot 41 percent (26-of-63) from the field, 22 percent (5-of-22) from beyond the arc, and 88 percent (22-of-25) from the free throw line. BYU-Hawaii shot a similar 43 percent (31-of-73) from the field, but it was the 3-point shot that made the difference, as the Seasiders knocked down 10-of-23 (43 percent) shots from outside.

Mann led four DSU players in double figures with 22 points and 13 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season (fifth consecutive). Bolden added a career-high 14 points, Leslie Tademy (Phoenix, Ariz./South Mountain) chipped in 13 points and seven assists, and Tomorie Sangster (Vacaville, Calif./Will C. Wood ) finished with 10 points.

The Storm now return home to host Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday at 5 p.m., to tip off a five-game homestand.
