Storm Women fall after Hawaii Hilo rallies in fourth quarter

The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped its first of three games in Hawaii Thursday, falling 68-63 at Hawaii Hilo.

The Storm (3-12, 3-6 PacWest) led by as many as 16 points, but went cold in the fourth quarter, shooting just 3-of-10 in the final period as the Vulcans outscored DSU 26-10 over the last 9:10 of the game.

The teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter as neither team led by more than five points. The Storm managed to build a 19-14 lead with 1:55 remaining in the period after Tomorie Sangster (Vacaville, Calif./Will C. Wood ) nailed a jumper. Tramina Jordan (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial) followed suit with a 3-pointer, and DSU led 22-19 after one quarter of play.

Dixie State made its move in the second quarter after Jordan knocked down another trey, sparking a 15-0 run and a 34-19 lead four minutes into the period. Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, Utah/Emery) added four points during the run and Tomorie Sangster (Vacaville, Calif./Will C. Wood ) drained her first of two 3-pointers on the night. The Vulcans cut the lead to 38-27 at the halftime break after Lauren Hong made a triple as time expired.

Like the first quarter, the teams continued to trade baskets in the third quarter as the Vulcans began to chip away at the DSU lead. Ashlee Burge (Riverton, Utah/Herriman) was the only Storm player to score multiple baskets in the third period as DSU scored a game-low 12 points in the period. After three quarters, the Storm lead was trimmed to 50-42.

Chermayne Moore (Pinole, Calif./Hercules) buried a 3-pointer to push the lead back to double-digits at 53-42 for Dixie State, but then the Storm went cold. Hawaii Hilo responded with a 10-0 run as DSU went the next 4:05 without a field goal. Mann pushed the Storm lead back to 55-52 with 5:13 remaining, but the Vulcans responded with an 8-0 run to regain the lead for the first time since the 4:24 mark of the first quarter. Moore trimmed the UHH lead to 60-59 with another triple, but the Storm would get no closer, as the Vulcans made their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

"We've got to take care of the ball and rebound," head coach Jenny Thigpin said. "It comes down to execution in the fourth quarter. We gave up too many second chance points down the stretch."

Dixie State shot 39 percent (25-of-63) from the field, 32 percent (8-of-25) from beyond the arc, and 55 percent (5-of-9) from the free throw line. Mann led three Storm players in double figures, finishing with 14 points and 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. Sangster added a career-high 12 points and four rebounds, while Moore also chipped in 12 points.

The Storm now head to Honolulu for a rematch with Chaminade on Saturday before wrapping up the three-game swing at BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday.
