Dixie State's volleyball team turned in its most dominating performance of the young season Saturday morning as the Storm blew through Molloy College in three sets, 25-16, 25-14, 25-19, in day two of the Cal State Los Angeles Invitational. The Storm improved to 2-1 overall, while Molloy fell to 0-3.
Dixie State trailed only twice the entire match by a total of just two points, and led wire-to-wire in the final set to complete the sweep. The Storm offense posted its highest hitting percentage of the season (.440), led by sophomore
Brette Anderson (Prescott, Ariz./Prescott HS) with 10 kills in 14 attempts. Meanwhile, juniors
Gianna Kioa (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird HS),
Delayne Daniel (American Fork, Utah/Pleaseant Grove HS) and
Lindsay Jones (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) registered seven kills apiece. Jones also had six total blocks (two solo) and two services aces, while Daniel recorded a team-high nine digs, and junior setter
Kailey Frei (Orem, Utah/Timpanogos HS) had 25 assists.
For the second-straight match, DSU's defense had another solid outing as it limited Molloy to a .047 hitting percentage, forcing the Lions into 22 attack errors with 13 total blocks.
In the finale, DSU trailed just once in claiming the first set 25-19. However the Flyers would take set two 25-20 before outlasting the Storm 27-25 and 25-23 in sets three and four, respectively, to close out the match. DSU finished the match with 56 kills, including game and career-high 18 from Daniel, while Jones chipped in with 12 kills. Frei tallied a season-high 41 assists and four Storm players finished with double-digit digs, led by
Alex Anderson (Prescott, Ariz./Prescott HS) with 17.
DSU was held to a .225 hitting percentage, thanks in large part to 12 total Flyer blocks and 20 attack errors.
Dixie State continues its season-opening 10-match road swing next weekend with four matches at the PacWest/GNAC Crossover Tournament, hosted by Central Washington.
