Dixie State opened the road portion of its 2015 schedule on a sour note as the Red Storm came out on the wrong end of a 66-7 non-conference decision at #25 Humboldt State Saturday night in Arcata, Calif. The loss dropped DSU to 1-2 on the season, while the Lumberjacks improved to 3-0.
Humboldt State forced a pair of DSU three-and-outs to open the game, and it was at the end of the second Storm possession that the Lumberjacks set up their first score as DSU mishandled a punt, which led HSU to gain possession on the Storm 9-yard line. The Jacks cashed in the miscue three plays later as quarterback Robert Webber found Chase Krivashei in the end zone for the game's first touchdown.
Dixie State answered on its next possession as freshman quarterback
Blake Barney (St. George, Utah/Dixie HS) led the Storm on an 11-play, 67-yard drive, which he ended with a 33-yard touchdown scamper to knot the score at 7-7 with 3:33 remaining in the opening frame.
From there it was all Humboldt as the Lumberjacks scored points on their next two possessions, including a 14-yard TD run by Ja'Quan Gardner before the end of the stanza, followed by a 47-yard Cameron Southward field goal on Humboldt's first possession of the second quarter, which gave HSU at 17-7 lead.
Humboldt then used a pair of big plays just before halftime to begin to pull away. The first came on a 93-yard touchdown pass from Webber to Marquise Deadwiler, while the Jacks special teams struck again as the unit blocked a DSU punt and returned it 23 yards to the house to give Humboldt a commanding 31-7 lead at intermission.
The Lumberjacks tacked on three more touchdowns in the third quarter, including touchdown runs of 8 and 41 yards by Gardner, while Webber and Krivashei hooked up again on a long 54-yard pass play near the end of the period to ice the game. HSU added two more scores in the final frame to close out the scoring.
Humboldt State outgained Dixie 565-281, including a 400-143 clip through the air, led by Webber who finished with 299 yards on 15-of-18 passing with three TDs. A week after setting a school record for rushing yards, Dixie State was held to 138 yards on the ground, with Barney accounting for 66 of those yards on 16 attempts, while he went 10-of-18 for 85 yards passing.
Dixie State will look to get back on track next Saturday as the Storm celebrates Homecoming Week and welcomes Azusa Pacific to Hansen Stadium for a GNAC showdown. Kick-off is slated for 6 p.m.
