Feickert stabilizes team, DSU rallies to beat Cal U 10-6

Dixie State to play for the NCAA National Championship on Monday

EDMOND, Okla. – Junior pitcher Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) stabilized the Dixie State softball team on Sunday after California University on Pennsylvania scored six unanswered runs. She allowed one hit in relief while the Red Storm offense pumped out the final seven runs of the game, leading the Red Storm to a 10-6 victory over the Vulcans in the national semifinals at Tom Heath Field on the campus of Oklahoma Christian University.

Dixie State improves to 52-7 on the season and will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship Game on Monday. The single-game final begins at noon CT (11 a.m. MT) with coverage on NCAA.com.

Feickert earned the win to move to 20-5 on the year, striking out one and giving up one unearned run, one hit and four walks. She retired eight of the final nine batters including a pair of screaming line drive comebackers hit right back at her.

The Red Storm scored three run in the opening inning. Freshman Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Stansbury Park) earned a lead off walk on four pitches and promptly stole second. The next batter, senior Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School), tripled to left center field for a 1-0 lead. Senior Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) followed with an infield single off the pitcher's glove to score Chavez. A double from senior Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) moved Hine to third, where she would score on an illegal pitch thrown by Cal U pitcher Meghan Uher.

The Vulcans (43-13) rallied with five runs, four of them unearned against NFCA Second Team All-American Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School). Cal U loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. The second walk of the inning forced in a run, the first given up my Duncan in 29 1/3 innings.  The tying runs scored on an errant throw to home from third base and the go ahead runs plated with a RBI groundout and a single down the third base line for a 5-3 lead.  Feickert entered the circle and ended the rally.

Cal U added their last run early in the third inning after a RBI single followed a dropped ball in left field by senior Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School).

Down 6-3 entering the fourth inning, Sherwin redeemed herself by getting on base after being hit by a pitch and moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Josey Hartman (Mapleton, UT/Maple Mountain) knocked a single to center field and a throwing error by the catcher let Hartman get to second and allowed Sherwin to score. Bassett trailed with a base hit past the second baseman, scoring Hartman and cutting the lead to 6-5. The speedy freshman stole second base and hustled around the bag at third to score after Hine beat out a ground ball sliding into first base to tie the game. Reiter continued the rally executing a perfect hit-and-run, grounding a single right past where the shortstop should have been. Breaking for second base, Reiter drew a throw that skipped into the outfield allowing Hine to score the go-ahead run, 7-6.  Senior Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) capped the five-run frame with a RBI single for an 8-6 advantage.

Dixie State added a pair runs in the sixth inning to build a 10-6 lead with a pair of sacrifice flies from Reiter and Gelter.

Feickert did not allow a Vulcan runner to get into scoring position after the Storm retook the lead.

Dixie State had its best output of the NCAA Tournament with 13 hits. Hine and Hartman each led the club going 3 for 4 at the plate.

The Red Storm softball team will become the first athletic program to compete for a NCAA National Championship in the school's history.
