Softball dominant over Hawks, posts best PacWest league record

Dixie State run-rules Holy Names twice celebrating Senior Day

ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Dixie State softball team swept Holy Names at home on Saturday afternoon, capping the best league record in Pacific West Conference at 31-1. DSU scored six run over the final two innings to take game one, 9-1, and rolled behind a one-hit pitching effort from junior Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) in a 12-0 victory at Karl Brooks Field.

With the wins, Dixie State has rattled off 10 straight victories and improves to 44-7 on the season. During the string, DSU has outscored it opponents 98-68, which includes six games finished early due to the NCAA run-rule. Holy Names falls to 9-45 on the year and 5-27 in league action.

The Red Storm was up 3-1 in game one after four innings. Senior outfielder Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) and senior infielder Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) belted consecutive RBI doubles in the fifth inning. Later in the frame, an infield single by senior outfielder Bailee Freeland (Ogden, UT/Bonneville High School) pushed Gelter home to cap the three-run rally.

Dixie would push three more runs across in the bottom of the sixth to bring the game to a close.  Senior infielder Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) blasted a solo home run to lead off the frame. Senior outfielder Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) ended up at third after a walk and subsequent single to center field by senior catcher Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School). During the at bat of sophomore infielder Mallory Paulson (Fruita, CO/Fruita Monument), a wild pitch allowed Hine to score. Paulson plated junior pinch runner Kristie Johnson (Temecula, CA/Chaparral High School) with a single to produce the Storm's eight-run winning margin.

Paulson finished 4-for-4 with two runs batted in while Chavez went 2-for-4 with three runs knocked home.

The victory went to senior Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School), who allowed one run on five hits in six innings. She fanned three batters in moving to 24-0 in the regular season.

After the late offensive spurt in game one, Dixie State did not waste time in game two. Freshman designated player Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Stansbury Park) tripled down the right field line and scored on a high-bouncing single to second base by Hine. A Paulson double cashed in Hine and Sherwin plated the final two runs of the inning with a two-out double.

Sherwin added two more runs doubling off the wall in left center in the third inning. The Storm got the two runs they needed, plus four more insurance runs, in the fourth inning to set up a shortened game. Sophomore infielder Josie Hartman began the rally with a gap-shot triple. Freeland lined a single into right field for a RBI. The bases would load following a Bassett bunt single and walk to Chavez. Hine earned a free run batted in drawing a walk to score Freeland. The DSU lead ballooned to 12-0, as Reiter drove a pitch to the wall in right-center field that cleared the base paths.

Feickert, the junior from California, faced one batter over the minimum, earning her seventh shutout of the season. She gave up one hit and struck out four Hawks in just 50 pitches thrown. Now 18-5 on the season, Feickert moves into second place on the single-season strikeout list with 142.

Sherwin, Bassett and Reiter all went 2-for-3, with Reiter leading the Red Storm with four runs batted in.

The Red Storm, ranked No. 1 in the last NCAA West Region ranking, will learn Monday morning at 8 a.m. if they will host one of two regionals for the third straight season.
