Dixie State sweeps slugfest from Cal State San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO - The No. 4 Dixie State softball team got plenty of offense and combined for 26 runs over two games to beat Cal State San Bernardino 12-11 and 14-3 on Monday afternoon.

The Red Storm (36-7, 23-1) racked up 23 hits, with 10 extra base hits including three home runs on the day. Mallory Paulson (Fruita, CO/Fruita Monument) went a combined 4 for 7, scored three runs, had seven RBI and had a pair of three-run homers.

Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) cranked out three doubles and went 5 for 7 with four runs and four RBI over the two games.

It wasn't her sharpest outing but Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) won again, giving her a 20-0 record and her second-consecutive 20-win season. She battled through 4.1 innings and gave up eight runs, five earned on nine hits in a wild 12-11 game one.

Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) picked up the win in game two with a five-inning complete game with 10 strikeouts. She surrendered three solo homers but that was all the damage done as she cruised to a win to improve to 15-5 this season.

The Coyotes (20-20) clubbed four homers over the course of the day, including a grand slam in game one.

GAME 1 RECAP
Tied 2-2, San Bernardino picked up two in the bottom half of the third and put the Coyotes back in front 4-2 after three innings.

The fifth inning was a big one for the Red Storm.

Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) started it off with a two-run single to tie it up at 4-4. Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) grounded out with the bases loaded to retake the lead at 5-4.

Then the big blast came with a Paulson three-run homer, making it 8-4 Red Storm.

Still not finished, DSU added back-to-back two-run doubles from Chavez and Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) to cap off a 10-run fifth inning and took a 12-4 lead.

The slugfest continued in the bottom half however, as Duncan surrendered a grand slam to cut the lead in half to 12-8 and knock her out of the game.

Beardshear surrendered three runs in a comeback effort by the Coyotes in the bottom of the seventh. An RBI double, a groundout and an infield single brought three in to make it interesting. A two-out pop out ended the rally and Dixie State survived game one 12-11 with Beardshear picking up the save.

GAME 2 RECAP
The big innings continued to spark the Red Storm in game two.

After a one run in the top of the first Dixie State exploded again for five runs in the second. Josey Hartman (Mapleton, UT/Maple Mountain) singled in Sarah Good (Castle Rock, CO/Castle View) and back-to-back doubles by Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Tooele) and Chavez brought in three more. Chavez came in on a double steal attempt for a 6-0 advantage.

Paulson widened the gap again with her second three-run homer of the day in the top of the third. Chavez doubled again to bring in Hartman and Kristie Johnson (Temecula, CA/Chaparral High School) followed it up with another double to score Chavez and Bailee Freeland (Ogden, UT/Bonneville High School), putting the Red Storm ahead 12-0.

Not wanting to feel left out of the two-bagger party, Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) laced her own double to left center to score Johnson for another run in the third.

The teams traded solo home runs as the game one with three for the Coyotes and one from DSU's Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, UT/Davis High School) in the fourth. Dixie State took the game 14-3 and swept the doubleheader.

Dixie State will host Notre Dame de Namur in Pacific West Conference play on Saturday. The doubleheader is set to begin at 11 a.m. MT.
