ST. GEORGE, Utah - The weather didn't want to cooperate Friday night, but the No. 4 Dixie State softball team earned a 7-4 comeback victory in game one before a weather delay postponed game two.
The Red Storm led game two 11-3 and was looking to add on in the bottom of the third before a weather delay with lightning in the area. The game will be resumed, weather permitting, on Saturday at 11 a.m. MT at Karl Brooks Field prior to the originally scheduled doubleheader against Azusa Pacific (27-23, 12-14).
With the win in game one, Dixie State (39-7, 26-1) secured a share of the Pacific West Conference Championship for the third-consecutive year. A win in game two will give the Red Storm the outright title for the first time.
GAME 1 Recap
DSU fell behind 4-1 to Azusa Pacific in game one in the bottom of the fourth before the bats came alive.Â
An error put
Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Stansbury Park) on base and a base hit from
Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) set the table for
Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School). Hine singled to score Bassett to make it 4-2.
Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) singled to right field and an error allowing the ball to roll to the warning track plated Chavez and
Bailee Freeland (Ogden, UT/Bonneville High School) running for Hine to tie the game up.
In the sixth with two runners on, Reiter delivered again with a sky-high blast over the left field wall to put Dixie State up 7-4 heading into the top of the seventh.
Duncan was able to put down the Cougars 1-2-3 and win her 22nd game of the year.Â
GAME 2 - In progress
Azusa Pacific jumped on the Red Storm early again, this time with a three-run homer to take an early 3-0 lead.
The Cougar advantage didn't last long with DSU evening things up after a three-run first as well thanks to two-run double from Hine and an RBI double by
Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School).
Dixie State took the lead when
Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) scored on a throwing error and added on when Chavez drove in Bassett with a single up the middle.
Four more runs came across, capped by a two-run double from
Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, UT/Davis High School), making it 9-3 after two innings.
Hine and Reiter each drove in another run for an 11-3 lead before rain and lightning forced the delay.
