ST. GEORGE, Utah - The No. 8 Dixie State softball team will play 12 games over a 10-day trip to the Hawaiian Islands beginning March 6.
The Red Storm (13-5, 4-0) rolls into Hawaii fresh off a sweep of Dominican to begin conference play undefeated. Dixie State will take on all the Hawaii schools in BYU-Hawaii, Hilo, Chamande and Hawaii Pacific.
Dixie State outscored the Penguins 41-11 over four games. The team collected 42 hits in the series en route to a .393 team batting average.
Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) hit .692 for the series, going 9 for 13 with eight RBI.
Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Tooele) scored 10 runs in four games and had three triples.
Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) also had nine hits and drove in nine runs to lead the team for the weekend affair.
Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) pitched two complete games, including one shutout over a perfect 2-0 weekend.
On the season, the Red Storm has outscored opponents 121-41 through 18 games. DSU has allowed just 25 earned runs with Duncan off to an 8-0 start and an ERA of 0.93 on the season.The first series at BYU-Hawaii begins Friday, March 6 with a doubleheader at 4:00 p.m. MT. Another twin bill against the Seasiders will be Saturday at 3 p.m. MT.
The Red Storm will island hop over to Hilo for a doubleheader Monday, March 9 at 5 p.m. MT. Wednesday, March 11 Dixie State returns to Oahu to take on Chaminade at 8:30 p.m. MT for a doubleheader and the trip closes with a four-game series against Hawaii Pacific beginning Friday, March 13 at 5 p.m. MT with two games. Games three and four will be Saturday at 4 p.m. MT.
