ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Dixie State baseball team completed a series sweep over Holy Names on Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field. The Storm took game one by a score of 10-3 and won the seven-inning finale, 6-2. DSU improved to 16-8 on the season and 11-1 in PacWest play.
Â
In game one, Dixie State took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles from
Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) and
Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy). The visiting Hawks (11-17, 3-12 PacWest) tied the game in the top of the fourth, but DSU answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Storm would score eight times, in total, before HNU posted a run in the final inning.
Â
Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and one driven in while Glover and
Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT/Copper Hills) each had two runs batted in.
Â
Aaron Pope (Chubbuck, ID/Highland) picked up the win in a quality start – six innings, two runs, seven hits and five strikeouts. The freshman southpaw has not allowed a walk in 26.1 innings this season.
Tanner Howell (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City) notched a three-inning save after allowing one run over the final three innings.
Â
In the finale, Dixie State capitalized on three HNU errors to score four times in the first inning.
Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) flared a single into right field, knocking in half of the Storm's early tallies.
Â
HNU threatened in the top of the sixth by loading the bases with nobody out.
Kolton Brost (Monsa, UT/Payson) got the only batter he faced to pop out, utilizing the infield-fly rule.
Jeremy Alderman (Cheney, WA/Cheney) entered to face a pinch hitter and induced an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play on the eighth pitch of the at-bat to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard.
Â
Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey) led the offense from the leadoff spot going 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Hayes Hall (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork) had the only extra-base hit, a double, in the Storm sixth.
Â
John Conquy (Las Vegas, NV/Durango) earned the win throwing five innings of two-run, eight-hit baseball and striking out three. Brost, Alderman and
Evan Parker (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) allowed just one hit over the final two innings.
