Dixie State drops season opener, 10-2

Three big innings push CPP past Storm on Friday

ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Dixie State baseball could not get past three big innings in Friday's 2015 season opener in a 10-2 defeat by Cal Poly Pomona at Bruce Hurst Field.

Max Bethell earned the win for CPP despite a limited pitch (1-0), allowing one run on five hits in four innings. Junior transfer Porter Clayton (Idaho Falls, ID/Bonneville) took the loss for the Red Storm (0-1), giving up three runs on just two hits over 4.2 turbulent frames.

Dixie State jumped out to the early lead cashing in on two early hits – a bunt single from Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) and a seeing-eye single to right field from Austin Nelson (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial). Bethell almost worked out the jam, but a balk called prior to a 3-2 pitch with two outs allowed Glover to scored from third for a 1-0 lead.

Clayton retired the first six batters he faced. A two-out walk to break a string of four consecutive strikeouts led to the Broncos pushing across three runs. Nick Cooksley singled home the tying run and Ryan Webberly plated two more with a line drive triple to dead center.

The CPP duo was featured in another three-run inning for the visitors in the sixth inning for a 6-1 lead. Following a lead-off single, Cooksley cued a RBI triple down the right field line and subsequently scored on a wild pitch. Webberly blasted his first home run on the 12th pitch of his plate appearance against DSU reliever Jeremy Alderman (Cheney, WA/Cheney).

Dixie State looked to threaten in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) walked and Glover singled up the middle. Kline would come in to score on a wild pitch, but the rally fell short when CPP induced an inning-ending double play.

Cal Poly Pomona continued to open the game up in the top of the eighth inning, scoring three runs of reliever Mitchell Franek (Grand Lake, CO/MIddle Park). With runners on second and third, the Broncos scored when Jason Padlo sprinted from third base after DSU completed a dropped third strike play over at first base. The Broncos made it 10-2 as pinch hitter Brennen Salgado doubled into left center plating Jacob Bernardy.

The pitching and defense of CPP were able to keep the Storm offense at bay, including a stretch of over three innings in which DSU did not get a base runner aboard. Overall, Glover and Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey) led the way at the plate, each recording two hits. None of the Storm's seven hits went for extra bases.

Dixie State continues play in this non-conference series with a Saturday double header against the Broncos at 11 a.m. (MT).
