Storm blanks Minot State in series opener

Howell, Brost combine on shutout of Beavers

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Make it five straight wins for Dixie State baseball. Tanner Howell (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City) and Kolton Brost (Monsa, UT/Payson) combined on a five-hit shutout while the offense broke open a scoreless tie in the seventh inning to defeat visiting Minot State 9-0 on Saturday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.

Dixie State improved to 5-7 on the season while Minot State fell to 0-2 after dropping their season opener to Montana State Billings earlier in the day.

Howell allowed two hits in the first inning, but settled down and allowed only two more safeties over the next three innings. He fanned four over 5.1 frames to secure his second win in as many starts. Brost entered with one out in the sixth and shut down the Beavers. The lefty struck out four and scattered a lone hit over 3.1 innings, a double, in the seventh to net a save.

The game was scoreless until the seventh inning stretch. Dixie State started a four-run rally with a lead off double from Miles Bice (Henderson, NV/Coronado). A ground ball moved Bice to third and Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey) cashed in the run with an infield single. Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) reached on a throwing error setting up Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) for an RBI single to right field. Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to right field, plating McLaughlin. Cam gust extended the inning with a two-out single. A pair of Minot State errors allowed Glover to score before the final out of the inning.

Dixie State added five insurance runs in the Storm eighth inning with two hits and two more Minot State errors. Austin Nelson (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) highlighted the action with a two-run single.

Doug Rolfson took the loss surrendering four runs on four hits in one inning. Minot State starter Austin Berntson threw six scoreless innings despite six walks.

Dixie State takes Sunday off before closing its series with Minot State on Monday in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
