Junior
Alexis Torres (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde HS) tucked in the game-winning goal with just under four minutes left to play in double overtime to lift Dixie State to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Fresno Pacific in the Storm's season finale Saturday night in Fresno, Calif. DSU won nine of its last 10 overall to finish the 2015 season at 11-6-0, 9-4-0 and in fifth place in the Pacific West Conference standings.
Sophomore
Darian McCloy (Herriman, Utah/Herriman HS) got DSU on the scoreboard midway through the 33
rd minute when she scored her seventh goal of the year on a close-range shot off a feed from senior
Jasmine Arollo (Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS). For Arollo, it was her eighth assist on the season, which tied her own single-season record for assists she set last season.
The Sunbirds tallied the equalizer at the 63:02 mark of the match as Jay Valtierra intercepted a Storm clearing attempt and found Bianka Garcia, who pushed a shot past DSU keeper
Stacie Gubler (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS) to knot the score at 1-1.
DSU was forced to play the final 15 minutes of regulation and both overtime periods a player down after Arollo picked up her second yellow card of the match, which became a red card and a disqualification. The Storm defense stepped up and held the Sunbirds scoreless despite facing nine total shot attempts over that stretch.
DSU had three great looks at a possible game winner in the waning moments of regulation as freshman
Tori Washington (South Jordan, Utah/Herriman HS) rocketed a shot that bounded off the cross bar with 1:46 left to play, and Torres was turned away with just seconds on the clock on a header attempt. However the Storm made their third and final attempt count as DSU sophomore
Montana Tanner (Bountiful, Utah/Viewmont HS) played a free kick just outside the box to Torres, who fired home the ball for her fourth goal of the year to seal the win.
"We had a lot of obstacles in our way tonight but we found a way to get it done," DSU Head Coach
Kacey Bingham said. "It was a tough game but everyone fought for the win. It was a good way to finish the season."
DSU won despite being outshot 23-14, including a 10-7 clip on goal. Freshman
Tori Washington (South Jordan, Utah/Herriman HS) led Dixie State with five shots, two on frame, while Torres finished with three of her four attempts on goal. Gubler made a season-high nine saves in her final collegiate start to pick up her sixth win in goal in her last seven outings.
