GAME NOTES (PDF)
Â
The Dixie State football team returns to Hansen Stadium Saturday for the first time in over a month, as the Storm host No. 13 Humboldt State. Dixie State last played at home on October 2, in a Friday night contest with Western Oregon. Since then, the Storm have played three consecutive games on the road, posting a 2-1 record in those games.
Â
Kickoff against the Lumberjacks is set for 6 p.m. Mountain Time, as DSU closes out its 2015 home schedule. Live coverage is scheduled on television (TDS Cable Channel 22), radio (ESPN Sports Radio 97.7 FM), and Internet (SouthernUtahLive.com), with
Keric Seegmiller on play-by-play and Devin Dixon providing color commentary.
Â
LAST MEETING: Sept. 19, 2015. Dixie State opened the road portion of its 2015 schedule on a sour note as the Red Storm came out on the wrong end of a 66-7 non-conference decision at then No. 25 Humboldt State in Arcata, Calif. The Storm evened the game at 7-7 in the first quarter on a 33-yard touchdown run from freshman quarterback
Blake Barney (St. George, Utah/Dixie HS), but the Lumberjacks responded with 59 unanswered points to secure the win. Â Barney led the offense with 66 yards rushing and a touchdown, while sophomore defensive back
Colton Olson (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork HS) and junior linebacker
Trevor Oakley (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS) led the defense with six tackles each.
Â
ALL-TIME VS. HSU: Saturday's game marks the 20th meeting between Dixie State and Humboldt State. The teams first met at Hansen Stadium in St. George on Sept. 23, 2006, with the Lumberjacks winning the inaugural game, 48-28. The Storm picked up their first win in the series on Oct. 20, 2007, a 17-10 victory at Hansen Stadium that sparked a four-game winning streak for Dixie State in the series. Humboldt State rattled off seven consecutive victories following the DSU win streak. The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series 13-6, including a 5-4 mark in St. George.
Â
RECORD-SETTERS: Dixie State rolled to a 48-25 victory over South Dakota Mines on Saturday and set or tied seven school records in the process. Barney rushed for a school-record 291 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries, and the Storm offense rushed for a school and GNAC record 589 yards on a school and conference record 67 attempts. The Storm cranked out 682 yards of total offense, shattering the previous single-game mark of 640 yards set last year at Colorado Mesa. DSU also broke a school record for yards per carry at 8.8, and tied a school record with six rushing touchdowns set earlier this year vs. CWU.
Â
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Following the record-setting victory in South Dakota, the Dixie State football team claimed two of the three Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors. For their efforts,
Barney  earned Offensive Player of the Week, while sophomore defensive backÂ
Colton Olson (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork HS) Â was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Week. Barney rushed for a school-record 291 yards and three touchdowns, and Olson co-led the defense with nine tackles (including five solo stops) and one interception.
Â
KNOW YOUR FOE: The Lumberjacks enter the game nationally-ranked at No. 13, and sport a 7-1 overall record with a 5-0 mark in the GNAC. HSU leads the conference in nearly every statistical category. Sophomore quarterback Robert Webber (118-of-193 passing, 1,464 yards, 14 TD), sophomore running back Ja'Quan Gardner (226 carries, 1,544 yards, 20 TD), and junior receiver Chase Krivashei (44 receptions, 589 yards, 11 TD) lead the offense, while junior linebacker Cameron Buell (57 tackles, 7.1 per game) leads the defense.
