Volleyball Hosts Westminster and FPU to Close Out Regular Season

Newly crowned 2015 PacWest Champs look to continue momentum heading into NCAA tourney in two weeks

(MATCH NOTES)

OPENING SERVE: Fresh off a successful three-match trip to Hawai'i, the newly crowned 2015 Pacific West Conference champion Dixie State women's volleyball team (18-9/15-4 PacWest) will wrap up the 2015 regular season this week with a pair of home matches at the DSU Student Activities Center. The Storm opens the homestand Wednesday night with a non-conference match against in-state foe Westminster College (7-19) at 6 p.m., followed by their PacWest season finale vs. Fresno Pacific (14-12/9-9 PacWest) Saturday at 12 noon.

DSU has won 15 of its last 17 overall, a stretch that propelled the Storm to their first-ever PacWest title, which was clinched late last Saturday night after Dixie State won at Hawai'i-Hilo (3-1), followed by a BYU-Hawai'i home loss (3-1) to Hawai'i Pacific. Dixie State also received the PacWest's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, marking the third-straight season the Storm has advanced to NCAA postseason play.

DIXIE STATE VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: Wednesday's match vs. Westminster will be just the second-ever meeting between the Storm and Griffins on the volleyball court. In 2007, Westminster handed DSU a 3-0 loss in a match played in Salt Lake City. DSU is 3-1 in it brief series with FPU and has won three-straight overall vs. the Hawks, including a 3-2 victory this past Oct. 21 in Fresno. DSU also claimed a 3-2 win the last time the two teams met in St. George in 2013, and a 3-0 road sweep in Fresno last year. However FPU's lone win in the series (3-1) did come at the DSU SAC in 2012.

COACHING STAFF: Head Coach Robyn Felder (Eastern Washington, 2002) is in her fourth season on the Storm bench. Felder has posted a 64-42 overall record during her tenure, including a 22-9 mark in 2014 in leading the Storm all the way the NCAA West Region final (Sweet 16). Felder is joined on the bench by assistant coaches Liz Fisher (fourth season), Whitnee Tupe (fourth season) and volunteer assistant Nate Capps (first season).

DSU IN THE POLLS: Dixie State received 12 votes in the latest 2015 AVCA Division II Coaches' Poll, which was released on Monday. The Storm is the lone PacWest representative listed in this week's rankings. The weekly NCAA West Region poll will not be released until this Wednesday. However last week DSU was ranked eighth in the region, one spot behind PacWest rival California Baptist. Alaska-Anchorage was ranked No. 1 in the region, followed by Western Washington, Central Washington, Sonoma State, Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego.

Anderson with 195 kills and she is second on the team in kills/set at 2.53 kps ... with seven block assists at Hilo last Saturday, Bird-Murphey became DSU's career leader in block assists ... Bird-Murphey (232) passed former DSU player Morgan Hill (2008-11), who collected 226 block assists in her four-year career ... Bird-Murphey Bird (24) needs three more solo blocks to move into third place on DSU's career solo blocks list, and she is also ranked #3 all-time in total blocks (256) and currently fourth in career hitting percentage (.261) ... junior setter Kailey Frei (Orem, Utah/Timpanogos HS) averaged 32.3 assists (9.7 aps) in three matches last weekend and recorded a career-high four aces at Chaminade ...
