Dixie State moved into a tie for first place, albeit possibly for at least half the day on Saturday, as the Storm closed out its 2015 home slate with a 1-0 result over Chaminade at nearby Dixie High School.
The win kept the Red Storm (10-1-4/8-0-4 [28 points]) unbeaten in PacWest play and pulled DSU even with Fresno Pacific with 28 points in standings. FPU will play at home vs. Concordia later Saturday night. An FPU win or tie will put the Sunbirds back on top of the standings ahead of next Saturday's DSU/FPU conference championship showdown in Fresno.
Dixie State scored its lone goal in late in the ninth minute when junior
Zach Leon (Oakley, Calif./Independence HS) streaked down the left sideline and fired a centering pass to freshman
Gabby Medina (Mesquite, Nev./Virgin Valley HS), who tucked home a shot past Chaminade keeper Bernd Buescherhoff from 15-yards out to give the Storm a 1-0 lead.
The Storm defense rose to the challenge of keeping the Silverswords off the scoreboard as DSU held Chaminade to just six shots, three on goal. Dixie State had several chances to pad its lead, the first coming in the 39
th minute when junior
Bernard Manuel (Ghana, West Africa/Elko (NV) HS) rocketed a left-footed shot two minutes after checking into the match, but Buescherhoff made the save to keep it a one-score affair.
DSU had three more shots on goal in the second frame including a pair of header attempts by junior
Jason Arollo (Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS) and a power shot from senior
Santiago Alejandro (Oakley, Calif./Alhambra HS), but again Buescherhoff denied the chances. Chaminade also recorded three second-half shot attempts on frame in the stanza, but junior netminder
Bradley Trella (Chandler, Ariz./Chandler HS) was up to the task on each attempt en route to his eighth shutout win of the year, and seventh 1-0 result overall.
"We are very happy to get this victory," DSU Head Coach
Josh Pittman said. "We came out strong and had another nice combination for a great goal by
Gabby Medina (Mesquite, Nev./Virgin Valley HS). Then I felt like we got too comfortable and gave up way too many possessions and Chaminade did a great job at the end of the first half and really came after us.
"I thought we started the second half stronger and we were just unlucky not to get a second goal," Pittman continued. "[Chaminade] keeper came up big on a couple saves. This sets up an exciting game against Fresno Pacific next Saturday night for a conference championship!"
Dixie State finished with 11 shots, five on goal, with freshman
Dominic Damato (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS) leading the way with a game-high four attempts.
Dixie State will close out the 2015 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 7, as the Storm will square off against #16 Fresno Pacific in a PacWest conference championship showdown. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. (PT).
