Men's Soccer Rallies for 1-1 Draw at Concordia

Storm stays unbeaten in PacWest play with three league matches left

Dixie State remained unbeaten in Pacific West Conference play as the Storm rallied for a 1-1 draw at Concordia University Saturday afternoon in Irvine, Calif. DSU moved to 8-1-4 overall, 6-0-4 in PacWest play and at the moment tied atop the league standings with Fresno Pacific with 22 points. FPU will play later tonight at home vs. California Baptist.

Dixie State forced the action on the offensive half during the early part of the match, but could not get the ball in the net despite five corner kick opportunities in the first 16 minutes play. However it was the Eagles who tallied the first goal as Eric Torres headed a cross from Anthony Rodriguez in the 21st-minute to spot CUI with a 1-0 lead. The Eagle goal also marked the first time Dixie State had trailed in a PacWest match this season.

The Storm began the second half like they did the first by forcing the issue on offense with three early shot attempts and two more corner kick chances. It was on the seventh corner kick that Dixie finally broke through as junior Jason Arollo (Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS) tallied his fourth goal of the year as he headed a kick from freshman Gabby Medina (Mesquite, Nev./Virgin Valley HS) into the center of the Eagles' goal to knot the score at 1-1.

Dixie had chances late in the frame to take the lead, but the Eagles did just enough on the defensive end to keep the Storm off the board. After playing a scoreless first overtime period, the Storm had a chance in the 102nd-minute as sophomore Frankie Mallek (Yuma, Ariz./Kofa HS) had a chance, but Eagle keeper Jordan Brinkley turned away the shot. Concordia mounted a late charge in the final minute as Jacob Rodewald fired the ball at the DSU goal in the closing seconds, but DSU netminder Bradley Trella (Chandler, Ariz./Chandler HS) was there to make the save as time expired to secure the tie and the one point in the PacWest standings.

"The boys battled hard today. We started off strong and then gave up a [first half] set piece," DSU Head Coach Josh Pittman said. "We attacked well in the second half and Jason [Arollo] came up huge again to score. I felt like we were unlucky not to get a second goal. It was a tough game."

DSU outshot Concordia 13-10, though both teams each recorded five shots on goal. Senior Santiago Alejandro (Oakley, Calif./Alhambra HS) led the Storm with four shot attempts, while Trella finished with four saves. Dixie State also wound up with a season-high 10 corner kicks.

Dixie State returns home for its final two home matches of the 2015 regular season next week. The Storm will play host to Hawai'i Pacific on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m., at Hansen Stadium. DSU will then close its home slate on Halloween Saturday, Oct. 31, vs. Chaminade at 12:30 p.m., in a match that will be played at nearby Dixie High School.
