DIXIE STATE vs. SIMON FRASER STORYLINES

DSU conference preamble features quest for a first win:
Dixie State (0-4) will host Simon Fraser (0-4, 0-1 GNAC) at Hansen Stadium in the Storm's Great Northwest Athletic Conference home opener on Saturday, October 4 at 6 p.m. MT. The game will be televised on CEC-TV and streamed at SouthernUtahLive.com. The Storm Radio Network will have the radio broadcast on ESPN SportsRadio 106.1 FM with John Potter, Devin Dixon and Patrick Amico calling the simulcast feed for all media outlets. Live stats will also be available via DixieAthletics.com.

Who said a dual-QB system doesn't work: Junior quarterback Ben Longshore (Santa Clarita, CA/Canyon) made his first start for the Storm last week against Azusa Pacific. He threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns while maintain the football with no interceptions. Longshore split snaps with sophomore Hayden Gavett (Corona, CA/Centennial), who led the DSU rushing attack. He personally rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown. Gavett also got Myles Burton (Berkeley, CA/Rodriguez) and Joel Davis (Natchez, MS/Natchez) the ball. This was the first week in which offensive coordinator Judd Thompson employed the dual quarterback system. The results included the Storm's best offensive output (338 total yards) since week one against Colorado Mesa (record 640 yards).

Clash of the Clans – GNAC style: Dixie State has won the last two games in the series (39-12 last year in St. George and a 42-35 shootout in Burnaby) and has captured six of the previous eight meeting. The Red Storm have won home meetings at Hansen in 2010, 2011 and 2013, while collecting victories on Canadian soil in 2010 and 2013. Running back Myles Burton (Berkeley, CA/Rodriguez) became half of the first rushing duo (Griff Robles (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork)) to each account for 100 yards in a game against the Clan last year.

SFU under new ownership: SFU alum and CFL veteran Jacques Chapdelaine became head coach of the Clan this season after spending five years as offensive coordinator of the BC Lions from 2008-13. He played seven years in the CFL for four different teams and has been on the coaching staffs of three Grey Cup championships. His SFU squad this year has gone 0-4, including the last two weeks on the road. Junior quarterback Ryan Stanford has thrown for 892 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions through four games. His favorite targets are senior receivers Bobby Pospichil and Kyle Kawamoto. Leading rusher Chris Tolbert has not played since early in the Clan's loss at APU two weeks ago, leaving the main rushing duties to senior Cole Tudor. Sophomore linebacker Jordan Herdman has more than double the tackles of any other SFU defender with 50, which leads the GNAC by 15 stops.

GNAC review: The league saw its first true conference game played in the shadows of the U.S./Canada border. Central Washington throttled Simon Fraser, 63-7, in the Battle for the Border in Bothell, Wash. Humboldt State used a 17-point spurt to defeat Western Oregon at the Redwood Bowl, 34-16. GNAC Offensive Player of the Week, Trent McKinney of South Dakota Mines, set a new league record with 503 yards of total offense to push the Hardrockers to a 62 44 win at William Jewell (Mo.). McKinney joins former DSU quarterback Griff Robles (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork) as the only GNAC signal callers to rush for over 200 yards in a game.

Brum's coaching ledger: Scott Brumfield is in his fifth year as head coach of the Storm. Brumfield has a 10-37 collegiate coaching record. Prior to being Dixie State's head coach, Brumfield was offensive coordinator at DSU. He was the head coach at his alma mater, Spanish Fork High School before moving to DSU.
