Jacks cut down Dixie State, 50-3

Home opener sullied by strong HSU attack

Box Score ST. GEORGE, Utah – Undefeated Humboldt State used big plays in all three phases of the game and saw its defense hold Dixie State to a season-low 147 yards in a 50-3 win in GNAC non-league action over the Red Storm at Hansen Stadium Saturday night.

The Jacks' offense scored six touchdowns – four rushing and two passing - but it was the HSU defense that shone brightest. Humboldt State (3-0) forced two fumbles – one run back for 52 yards leading to a touchdown – and two interceptions, including one taken back for a pick-six score.

Dixie State (0-3) saw no offensive player account for more the 61 yards of individual offense. The Storm's lone score came in the second quarter after Jacob Witham intercepted a pass in the Jacks zone. Alex Giordani split the uprights from 32 yards out to avoid the shutout.

However, the list of offensive game highlights heavily favored the Jacks. HSU racked up 425 yards of total offense while moving the sticks seven out of 18 times of third down. Comparably, the Storm struggled to keep the offense on the field going 1-of-15 on third down, the lowest conversion rate of the 2014 season.

The Storm featured all three of their dressed quarterbacks in the game. Sophomore Hayden Gavett again fought to find open receivers, connecting on only 5-of-15 passes. His first pass of the game was intercepted and a tipped ball late in the second quarter led to HSU's pick-six. Brody Garr got the call late in the first half. He went 1-for-6 passing for 10 yards while getting sacked three times. Ben Longshore got his first Dixie State action in the Storm's final drive consisting of three rushes.

DSU's defense racked up large tackle totals based on spending over 34 minutes on the field. Senior corner Zac Christian led all tacklers with nine stops while safety Aeryus Holloway made eight tackles. Senior defensive lineman Jake Miller had another big game with seven tackles, two for loss including a sack. Joining Witham in the interception stat column was senior linebacker Garland Munns who tipped a pass in the third quarter and brought down the loose ball.

Dixie State continues play at Hansen Stadium next week hosting Azusa Pacific in the last league non-counter before conference play officially begins. Kickoff on Sept. 27 is set for 6 p.m.
