Early goal marred by late errors in 3-1 loss at No. 19 CSUSB

Box Score SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Dixie State women's soccer team came up short on its road match Saturday, as the Storm were handed a 3-1 defeat at the hands of host and No. 19 Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino.

The Storm (1-2-1) struck first on a goal from Erica Gonzalez (Avondale, AZ), but the Coyotes fought back with three goals in the second half to pull ahead in the non-league battle. CSUSB remains undefeated at 4-0 on the season. The match was played in sweltering hot conditions with temperatures hoveing around 110 degrees at Premier Field.

"We scored a great early goal today, but had too many defensive errors," DSU head coach Kacey Bingham said.

Gonzalez put DSU up 1-0 in the 33rd minute after breaking free off a Jennifer Mason (Springville, UT) pass. The shot from the left past the CSUSB keeper gave DSU the lead at halftime.

Kiana Quarles netted the equalizer and go-ahead goals in the second half, her third and fourth goals of the year. Melanie Guayo added a penalty kick in the 81st minute to seal the two-goal winning margin.

"When we play good teams, we can't afford to have a let down," Bingham added. "We learned something today and this will be great preparation for us."

The Storm will make another trip to Southern California next weekend for matches with Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Monday.
