Storm fall short in Ellensburg, 48-14

CWU offense explodes as DSU falls to 0-2

Box Score ELLENSBURG, Wash. - One of the nation's top offenses after one week of NCAA play saw the tables turns as Central Washington posted 581 yards en route to a 48-14 win over Dixie State at Tomlinson Stadium Saturday afternoon.

CWU quarterback Jake Nelson threw for a career-high 299 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Jordan Todd (107) had two rushing scores and eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the third consecutive time against the Red Storm. Kent McKinney amassed 140 yards on five catches including a 46-yard touchdown on Central's first play from scrimmage in the first quarter.

Dixie State junior receiver Nate Stephens (Redding, CA) made his lone grab, a 62-yard pitch and catch from Hayden Gavett (Corona, CA), in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7. Aubrey Reed (Tacoma, WA) paced all DSU wide outs with three grabs. Sophomore tailback Colton Peterson (Logan, UT) rushed for 57 yards and scored his second touchdown of the year in the fourth quarter. DSU was held to 235 total yards by the Wildcats - 405 yard less than the output in week one against Colorado Mesa.

Unfortunately for the Storm, the Wildcats posted 41 unanswered points between the scores from Stephens and Peterson.

After Zac Christian (Plain City, UT) forced a fumble on CWU's second drive, DSU produced a three-and-out. The Wildcats produced the longest drive of the game with a long 17-play sequence spanning over seven minutes. They converted three times on third down and once on fourth down before Nelson hit Jesse Zalk for a 15-yard TD and a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

CWU added to the lead midway into the second quarter. After a defensive personal foul put the Wildcats deep into the red zone, Nelson called his own number and scored to the right-side pylon to build a 21-7 lead.

Five minutes later, the Wildcats struck again after Todd found the end zone on a 14-yard run. CWU had a last chance to expand the lead with seconds remaining in the half, but Garland Munns (Garland, UT) forced Nelson to fumble at the goal line. CWU settled for a 28-7 lead at the break.

CWU would add 10 points each in the third and fourth quarters with two Sean McDonald field goals (24, 31) and a pair of rushing scores from Todd and backup Melvin Thorton.

Gavett struggled to find the offensive groove throughtout the game. He completed only 4 of his 18 attempts and threw a pair of second half interceptions. Brody Garr (Taylor, UT) took the reps over the final three drives, leading Dixie State to its final points. Garr made three crisp pass completions while relying primarily on Peterson's work on the ground. Out of the offset I-formation, Garr handed off to Peterson up the gut for a touchdown run of 15 yards. Garr went 3-for-5 with 40 passing yards in the fourth quarter.

Munns led all DSU defenders with 10 tackles while Justin Ence (St. George, UT) and Aeryus Holloway (Compton, CA) each had nine. Defensive end Jake Miller (Tremonton, UT) had four tackles for loss including the team's first sack of the season.

The Storm continues GNAC play on September 20 against Humboldt State in the home opener at Hansen Stadium. Kickoff against the Jacks is slated for 6 p.m.
