Box Score 2 DURANGO, CO -- If the sixth ranked offense in the NCAA Division II needed to validate its potency, the Dixie State University softball team made itself known on Tuesday afternoon in a pair of non-conference wins over Fort Lewis College 11-2 and 7-2 in Durango.
The Red Storm (33-8) scored 18 runs, pounded out 29 hits of which seven where home runs and five doubles, to cruise to victory over the Skyhawks (21-19) and run its winning streak to 10 games.
Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School),
Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School),
Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, UT/Davis High School),
Brooke Budge (Springville, UT/Springville High School) each homered in the opener and Chavez, Hine, and
Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) added blasts in the second game.
Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) improved to 16-6 in the opener by allowing seven hits, two earned runs and striking out nine batters.
Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) earned her ninth win of the season in the second game as she nine hits, one earned run and struck out three hitters.
In the opener the Skyhawks took the lead in the second inning on a solo home run and led until the fourth when the Red Storm plated four runs. Sherwin scored on a
Mallory Paulson (Fruita, CO/Fruita Monument) double to center field that scored the equalizer. DSU took the lead in the same inning on an infield single by Woodfall and
Josey Hartman (Mapleton, UT/Maple Mountain) forced an error that scored the third and fourth run of the inning.
Hine hit her first home run of the season and the day in the fifth inning, giving DSU a 5-1 lead and Chavez added her solo shot in the sixth to extend the lead to 6-2.
DSU added five more runs in the seventh inning when Woodfall hit a two run homerun and Budge followed with her two run shot. The final run scored on an RBI double by Hine.
Woodfall led DSU with three hits and three RBI and Paulson, making just her second start of the season, chipped in three hits as well.
In the night cap, Fort Lewis opened the game scoring the first run in the bottom of the first after a Red Storm error and a triple. But, DSU also capitalized on an error to knot the game at one through two innings.
Hine hit her second home run of the day and season, this time a two run blast in the third inning. Sherwin followed with her fifth of the season to give DSU a 4-1 lead.
A Chavez two-run blast in the fourth, followed by an RBI triple from Sherwin extended the DSU lead to 7-1.
Chavez, Hine and Sherwin each finished with three hits and two RBI to lead DSU to the victory.
The Red Storm make the short three hour trip to Grand Junction tonight for a pair of games against Colorado Mesa at 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
